Reasonable Accommodation Fund

The University of Alberta has a duty to accommodate, to the point of undue hardship, those staff members who require an accommodation related to a protected ground under the Alberta Human Rights Act. Because specialized equipment and adaptive technology are sometimes required to accommodate staff with permanent medical restrictions and limitations, the university created a Reasonable Accommodation Fund (RAF) for equipment and/or adaptive technology. The RAF is a central fund that assists departments by offsetting some of the costs of reasonable accommodation measures for faculty and staff with permanent medical restrictions and limitations.

Process

  • Read the RAF - Guiding Principles  to learn more about the RAF requirements and eligibility.
  • If it appears that your situation may meet the eligibility criteria, you and your staff member will need to complete the Request for Permanent Accommodation Due to Physical or Mental Disabilities form and submit it to Human Resource Services.
  • The staff member and their treating physician will be required to complete the RAF - Medical Accommodation  form and submit it to Homewood Health Inc. (HHI).
  • If your staff member is not currently working with HHI, then the supervisor will need to complete an On-Line Notification form when the RAF - Medical Accommodation form is about to be submitted.
  • Once all information is gathered and assessed, the staff member and supervisor will be advised of the outcome.
  • If approved, the RAF - Application for Funding  form is completed by the supervisor and forwarded to the Return to Work Consultant.
