What you will learn

Course overview

CBCT  impacts every dental discipline and has specific functions in implant planning, TMJ, airway analysis and pathology. Participants in this course will:

  1. Complete a review of the fundamentals of imaging, radiation dosimetry and clinical guidelines.
  2. Attend a workshop involving image acquisition and interpretation.
  3. Take an exam about the knowledge and skills gained.

Learning objectives

  • Master the fundamentals of CBCT technology, grasping its operational principles and the significance of multi-dimensional imaging.
  • Comprehend the effects of ionizing radiation on biological matter, implementing radiation hygiene practices and techniques to minimize patient exposure.
  • Explore diverse clinical indications for CBCT, while becoming well-acquainted with craniofacial anatomy and its variations.
  • Expertly prescribe operational parameters for imaging, skillfully utilizing software to visualize CBCT images and select appropriate visualization methods.
  • Hone the ability to provide basic interpretation of CBCT images, tapping into their diagnostic potential and enhancing your skillset.
  • Prepare meticulously for seamless CBCT equipment installation, ensuring optimal functionality within clinical or research environments.

Syllabus

Theory Module

The CBCT theory review covers the fundamentals of diagnostic imaging and clinical guidelines. Topics covered include:

  • Radiologic physics
  • Radiation dosimetry
  • Risk vs. benefit analysis
  • Craniofacial anatomy
  • Measures of specificity and sensitivity
  • Evolution of dental imaging
  • Device settings
  • Device comparison
  • Operational parameters
  • Software visualization
  • Clinical applications
  • Fundamentals of CBCT
  • Interaction of x-rays and biologic matter
  • Strategies for imaging and radiologic interpretation and reporting

Workshop module

Participants will have the opportunity to obtain hands-on training with the software and become competent in typical applications of CBCT. They will be provided with cases such as implant planning, TMJ examination, airway analysis, and impacted teeth to demonstrate their understanding and proficiency with CBCT. Image results and radiologic interpretation will be graded to document competency.

Final exam

Lastly, participants will be administered a multiple-choice exam. A score of 80% or higher will be needed to complete the certification.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for this program participants must have an active practicing license from their dental regulatory authority in Canada.

Online materials are accessible for one year.

Our leading faculty

Dr. James Mah
program director in orthodontics and OSA

Dr. Mah, DDS, MSc, DMSc, BSc, is a clinical professor and the program director in orthodontics and dean of dentistry at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His research is focused on 3-dimensional imaging and modelling for diagnosis, treatment planning and therapeutics as well as anthropology and forensics.

He has been involved in the research and development of 3-D facial imaging devices, intra-oral scanners, CAD/CAM applications in dentistry and cone-beam CT scanners.

He obtained his doctorate of dental surgery, master of science degrees and his certificate of specialization in orthodontics from the University of Alberta. Following he graduated from Harvard Medical School with a doctorate of medical science degree and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the department of orthopaedics at Children's Hospital, Boston.

Dr. Mah has authored numerous publications, textbooks, and book chapters and regularly presents nationally and internationally. In addition, his work has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, The National Post, Tech TV and Men's Health. He also reviews for the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics and other dental journals.

Dr. Shawneen Gonzalez
Oral and maxillofacial radiologist

Dr. Gonzalez, DDS, MS, Diplomate ABOMR, is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and is the creator of an informational oral radiology website where she educates other dental professionals worldwide.

She is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, International Association of DentoMaxillofacial Radiology and American Dental Education Association.
