What you will learn

Summary

If you're passionate about improving oral health in underserved areas or participating in dental outreach missions, atraumatic restorative therapy (ART) is essential for making a difference.

ART is a procedure that utilizes adhesive restorative materials to provide interim restoration of decayed teeth. Hand instruments are often used to remove carious tooth tissue and no local anesthesia or electrical instruments are required. ART delivers a provisional procedure for populations that do not have immediate access to full dental care. While ART is a temporary fix, it nonetheless provides great pain relief and peace of mind to patients in the interim.

Throughout this course, dental hygienists will learn to provide atraumatic restorative therapy through online modular courses and hands-on clinical and laboratory experiences.

Proficiency in ART

Proficiency in ART can impact the career of an RDH.

Here are some potential benefits:

  • Expanded skill set: ART adds a valuable skill to a dental hygienist's repertoire, allowing them to offer a wider range of patient services.
  • Reaching underserved populations: ART's minimally invasive approach is useful in reaching underserved populations who may not have immediate access to full dental care. RDHs with ART proficiency can make a positive impact on these communities.
  • Career advancement: Being proficient in ART may lead to career advancement opportunities, such as supervisory roles or specialization in restorative procedures within dental hygiene.
  • Enhanced patient care: Dental hygienists can provide more comprehensive care by offering ART as an option for patients, emphasizing the importance of timely treatment and improving overall oral health outcomes.
  • Increased patient satisfaction: Patients may appreciate ART's gentler, drill-free approach, leading to higher patient satisfaction and loyalty.
