Overview
Discover the core prosthetic and surgical skills for dental implantology through our program. The AIR program includes an online theory course and a hands-on surgical course. Embark on a transformative journey, honing your abilities through instructive and clinical training to seamlessly integrate implantology into your practice.
There is the option to register for the entire residency or space things out and register for each course independently. By registering for the full residency, you will gain access to our expanded theory curriculum with an additional live Zoom session at no added cost.

Dental implantology theory course only

Only interested in taking theory right now? No problem!
To get started with pursuing dental implants, you need to complete an online theory module. This course includes a combination of self-paced online learning and live-streamed lectures. This comprehensive course offers informative and in-depth education about dental implants and the requirements for incorporating them into your practice.
The theory-only course is entirely online comprising a guided self-study curriculum with two live Zoom sessions.
Theory-only participants will be able to access recordings through eClass.

The next and final step in completing your residency is our hands-on surgical course.
Join us for a comprehensive residency where you'll undergo hands-on learning over five weekends. Participate in an in-person simulation lab, live surgeries (one and two), and prosthetic sessions (one and two) with expert guidance from our instructors. Don't miss this chance to enhance your career!
If it has been over two years since completing the theory course, it needs to be retaken first.

Following the simlab there are two surgical and two prosthetic weekend sessions.
Prerequisites
Participants must:- In the theory portion:
- Hold a DDS/DMD degree and an active practicing license from their dental regulatory authority.
- In the hands-on portion:
- Hold a DDS/DMD degree with National Dental Examining Board of Canada exam completion or equivalency and an active practicing license from their dental regulatory authority.
- Letter of good standing from their current dental regulatory authority in Canada.
- Current Heart & Stroke Foundation CPR certificate (only the foundation CPR is accepted).
- Successful completion of the Alberta implant residency theory module.
- Out-of-province participants must apply and meet eligibility for a courtesy register in Alberta.
- Application for registration the courtesy register through the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta (CDSA).
Payment plan
If participants plan on completing the full residency, they can pay a lump sum or register for the theory course, and then pay for the surgical course in three equal installments. If they opt to pay in installments, this is the schedule:
- Installment one is due at registration for the surgical course.
- Installment two is due two weeks before the posted date for live surgery session one.
- Installment three is due two weeks before the posted date for live surgery session two.
Failure to pay on time may result in late fees, an inability to access eClass, or removal from the course without a refund.
Receiving CE credits
Upon successful completion of the theory and hands-on surgical courses, participants will receive a certificate of completion which must be submitted to their regulatory authority. The regulatory authority issues CE credits; therefore, we cannot guarantee the number of CE credits issued. A certificate of completion is not a certification; if applicable; it is the regulator who will certify participants.

- A cancellation fee of 20% of the course cost will apply unless the withdrawal is due to a medical condition.

- If participants wish to transfer to the next cohort please submit they must request in writing to cdeair@ualberta.ca three weeks before the posted date for live surgery session one. To be eligible, they must be able to complete the residency within two years. transfer fees may apply.
Bringing an RDA
Participants can bring one RDA for free to attend the implant residency. If they want to bring an additional RDA, there's an additional fee.
Accessing course materials
Course materials can be found on eClass, an email will be sent out to all participants with directions on how to access eClass.
Online materials are accessible for one year.

Our leading faculty
The University of Alberta’s implant residency is taught by qualified general practitioners and specialists who offer a learning experience designed to instill the confidence, knowledge and skills necessary to practice implants.
Dr. Cheryl Cable
specialist in prosthodontics
Dr. Cable, DDS, MBA, FRCDC, is a board-certified specialist in prosthodontics with advanced training in maxillofacial prosthodontics.
She is a media expert and knowledge network leader for the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) and has published in scientific journals, magazines, and online forums. She has taught at the University of Alberta since 2001 in the areas of implant dentistry, restorative dentistry, business applications and peer mentorship.
Her research interests focus on how the communication of knowledge to patients aids in the functional rehabilitation of patients and contributes to successful clinical, academic and outcome-based environments.
Dr. Reena Talwar
Specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery
Dr. Talwar, DDS, OMS/PhD, FRCDC, is an associate clinical professor in the division of oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Alberta.
Her primary clinical interests include dentoalveolar surgery, implantology, skeletal and facial deformities and trauma. Additionally, her doctoral research focused on hormonal influences at the cellular and molecular level in chondrocytes from the temporomandibular and femoral condyle.
Dr. Talwar was one of the founding developers of the Toronto Maxi Program and continues to instruct and support implant education. She is the founding facilitator for the University of Alberta’s AIR (Alberta Implant Residency) Program.
Dr. Antonella Trache
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
Dr. Trache, DDS, BSc, CertOMS, CD, is currently the discipline lead for oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Alberta.
She retired from the Canadian Armed Forces after a 21-year career where she accumulated a vast array of memorable and valuable experiences from both professional and personal perspectives. Dr. Trache was the first female oral and maxillofacial surgeon in the Royal Canadian Dental Corps. The highlight of her military career consisted of the two tours of duty in Afghanistan, as the maxillofacial trauma surgeon at the Role Three Multinational Hospital at Kandahar Air Base.
Since leaving the military, she has been involved with the School of Dentistry as an associate clinical professor on a part-time basis before joining the faculty full-time. She is actively involved with the general practice residency (GPR) program, where she mentors the four GPR residents in clinic-based dentoalveolar surgery. Dr. Trache is also a clinical instructor with continuing dental education in the intravenous sedation program and the Alberta implant residency program. She presented lectures and workshops on maxillofacial trauma topics to various military and civilian organizations, and study clubs throughout the country.
Additionally, Dr. Trache is a member of several School of Dentistry and Alberta Dental Association committees. When not at the school, she maintains a private practice in Edmonton at Contours Oral Surgery.
Dr. James Yacyshyn
director, continuing dental education
Dr. Yacyshyn, DDS, MS, BSc, obtained his bachelor of science and doctor of dental surgery from the University of Alberta and completed a masters in applied science engineering from the University of Toronto. With a background in health technology and informatics, Dr. Yacyshyn joined the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in 2001 and was later appointed as the director of continuing dental education in 2002.
As director, Dr. Yacyshyn has developed and facilitated numerous educational programs spanning various topics for licensed dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and allied health practitioners across Alberta, nationally and internationally. Additionally, through clinical programs, we have provided care for numerous patients over the years.

Dr. Manuel Lagravère
Director, Applied Oral Health Research Unit
Dr. Lagravère, DDS, MSc, PhD, is a professor, speaker and researcher. His publications include several book chapters and over 150 peer-reviewed papers.
After graduating with a masters of science, Dr. Lagravère moved to Edmonton to pursue his PhD in orthodontics at the University of Alberta, which he completed in 2009. Immediately following his convocation, Dr. Lagravère was awarded a fellowship from the College of Dentists of Canada in the specialty of orthodontics and dental facial orthopedics. He also has a clinical trial expert certification.
His research focuses on improving the mastication process, or chewing of food, in children and adolescents. Dr. Lagravère is also interested in how the bones in the upper and lower jaws affect breathing and the production of growth hormones. Currently, he is working on an artificial intelligence model to analyze airways and determine if some orthodontic treatments are more suitable than others in helping reduce sleep apnea in children.
Dr. Adam Abdo
Maxillofacial surgeon
Dr. Abdo, BSc MecE, DMD, MDent, FRCDC, graduated from the oral and maxillofacial surgery program at the University of Manitoba. Born and raised in Edmonton, Dr. Abdo began his educational journey at the University of Alberta and completed a degree in mechanical engineering.
He then pursued dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan furthering his career with specialty training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Abdo recently completed a fellowship in pediatric maxillofacial surgery in Melbourne, Australia focusing on managing patients with cleft lip and palate and other maxillofacial deformities.
Dr. Lee Darichuk
Oral and maxillofacial surgeon
Dr. Darichuk, BSc, DMD, MDent, FRCDC, is a native Calgarian and obtained his bachelor of science from the University of Calgary.
He completed his dental degree at the University of British Columbia in 2004 followed by a general practice residency at Vancouver Hospital. He relocated to Winnipeg in 2005 to begin residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Manitoba. In 2009, he passed the National Dental Specialty Examination of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and was awarded a master’s degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery from the University of Manitoba.
Following graduation, Dr. Darichuk spent time with the Head and Neck Disease Site Group at Cancer Care Manitoba. He maintained a private practice in Winnipeg until January 2015. During this time he enjoyed privileges at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, Seven Oaks Hospital, Manitoba Children’s Hospital, and Victoria Hospital where he practiced broad scope oral and maxillofacial surgery.
He is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Alberta, and a specialist member of the Manitoba Dental Association.
In his spare time he enjoys cheering on the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets, travel, and soaking up continuing education to improve his ability to serve his patients.
Dr. Morgan Gwin
Prosthodontist
Dr. Gwin, DDS, MSD, Cert. Pros, obtained a degree in mechanical engineering before completing the doctor of dental science program at the University of Alberta in 2015.
She spent three years in private practice in the Edmonton area before returning to graduate school at the University of Washington to specialize in Prosthodontics.
Dr. Ahmed Hussain
Specialist in prosthodontics
Dr. Hussain, BDS, DDS, MSc (Prostho), DMedSc, FRCD(C), is a recognized dental professional who holds several prestigious degrees and certifications and is the discipline lead of restorative dentistry and the director of the dental implant clinic at the University of Alberta.
His degrees and certifications include a doctor of dental surgery (DDS), a doctor of medical science (DMedSc), a master of science (MSc) in prosthodontics, and a bachelor of dental surgery (BDS). He is also a Canadian board-certified specialist in prosthodontics, and has been honored with membership in the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hussain has made significant contributions to the field of dentistry through his teaching, research, publications, and expertise. His areas of interest and expertise include biomaterials, digital dentistry, artificial intelligence, and prosthodontics. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Alberta, Dr. Hussain worked as an assistant professor in prosthodontics and director of the digital dentistry program at the University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Carl Young
Physician, surgeon and dentist
Dr. Young, BSC, DDS, MD, FRCD(C), completed both his bachelor of science and doctor of dental surgery degrees at the University of Alberta, graduating from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry as their Gold Medalist in 1998.
He went on to join the University of California Davis and San Francisco Campuses, earning his doctor of medicine degree in 2002 and gaining admission to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. This was followed by a year of general surgery and his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency.
In 2005, Dr. Young started a busy and rewarding career in Calgary and returned home to Edmonton to join Renew Oral and Facial Surgical Centre. Dr. Young is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also a licensed physician, surgeon and dentist in California.
Dr. Young is married and is interested in conservation efforts and long motorcycle trips.
