Our leading faculty

Dr. James Yacyshyn
director, continuing dental education

Dr. Yacyshyn, DDS, MS, BSc, obtained his bachelor of science and doctor of dental surgery from the University of Alberta and completed a masters in applied science engineering from the University of Toronto. With a background in health technology and informatics, Dr. Yacyshyn joined the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in 2001 and was later appointed as the director of continuing dental education in 2002.

As director, Dr. Yacyshyn has developed and facilitated numerous educational programs spanning various topics for licensed dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and allied health practitioners across Alberta, nationally and internationally. Additionally, through clinical programs, we have provided care for numerous patients over the years.

Dr. Lowell B. Riemer
Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology

Dr. Riemer, BSc, DDS, D-ABFO, was born, raised, studied and worked in the Edmonton area. A graduate of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Alberta in 1978, he worked as a general dentist for 29 years.

Upon retirement from clinical practice, Dr. Riemer pursued his interest in forensic odontology through numerous courses on the subject in Canada and the USA. He completed a one-year fellowship at the Center for Education and Research in Forensics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2010. He is a member of the American Society of Forensic Odontology, is a fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and, became a diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Odontology in 2022. Dr. Riemer currently serves as a consultant to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Alberta as well as various police agencies. He is also a member of the Forensic Odontology Response Team (FORT) BC Society.
