U of A Ukrainian Student Financial Support

To learn more about possible financial support and tuition rates for Ukrainian students who  entered Canada through the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET)  program, please visit the FAQ for Current and Prospective Students webpage.

Working In Canada

Ukrainian students who receive the open work permit at the port of entry can work both on and off campus. There are no restrictions on the number of hours.

Applying for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

If you want to work in Canada, you will need to obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN) .

  • You are encouraged to apply online . You can also apply by mail or in-person. You can find a Service Canada Centre located in Canada Place at 9700 Jasper Avenue. To get there, take the Clareview LRT train heading North and get off at Churchill Station.
  • Consult the What you need before you apply page to ensure you have all the required documents ready before you apply.
  • Work or Study Permit
  • Passport

Health Care

All Ukrainian nationals who arrived in Alberta on the CUAET program qualify for Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). 

Applying for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)

To apply for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), you will need to prepare the following documents to present in person:

Applying for an Alberta Health Benefits program

Once you receive your Alberta personal health card, you can apply to receive additional health benefits that includes ongoing coverage for prescription drugs, essential over-the-counter medications, eye exams and glasses, dental care, essential diabetic supplies and emergency ambulance services.

Ukrainian evacuees will receive an Alberta Health Benefits (Ukrainian Evacuee) application form in the mail after they receive their Alberta personal health card. Complete this form and mail it using the pre-addressed envelope provided (registries cannot accept this form) or fax it to the number below.

An Alberta Health Benefits card will be mailed to you once the application has been processed. Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for processing. If you require emergency prescription drug coverage and/or emergency dental and optical services while your application is being processed, call Alberta Supports or the 24-hour Emergency Income Support Contact Centre as listed above.

Remember to carry both your Alberta personal health card and the Alberta Health Benefits card whenever you need health services.

Ukraine Help Line

A provincial Ukraine Help Line is now available to callers toll-free across Canada. In addition, they have launched two international numbers for callers from Ukraine and Poland. Callers in Canada, Ukraine and Poland can inquire about support and services in Alberta available for Ukrainian evacuees in either Ukrainian, Russian or English.

The Ukraine Help Line is open Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Canada MST) and is closed on statutory holidays.

Please note mobile access to toll-free calling in a region such as Ukraine or Poland depends on each subscriber's package with their mobile provider, carriers may charge for an international dialling package or mobile access airtime.

Permanent residence for Ukrainian nationals with family members in Canada

IRCC has put a temporary public policy in place to help families affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine reunite in Canada.

This policy lets certain Ukrainian foreign nationals in Canada and their family members apply for permanent residence.

  • Family members can live in or outside Canada
  • Permanent resident visas will be issued to family members living outside of Canada.

If you meet the eligibility criteria of the public policy, you can apply for permanent residence. For more information on this temporary public policy, please refer to IRCC instructions on who is eligible and how to apply .
