Americas

The University of Alberta has many important relationships and connections in the Americas. Within the region, the countries of the United States, Mexico, and Brazil have strategic institutional importance, and key faculty initiatives also exist in countries such as Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia.

United States of America

A key pillar of UAlberta's engagement with the United States is our active participation in the Canada–U.S Fulbright Program. Over the last 25 years, through the various Canada–U.S Fulbright programs and the Killam Fellowships Program, Fulbright Canada has granted awards to over 100 students and scholars for education exchange both to and from the University of Alberta. A particular highlight is the eight Fulbright Visiting Research Chairs hosted by various faculties at the University of Alberta.

The United States represents a top-five source country for student enrolment at the University of Alberta.

Mexico

The University of Alberta works closely with a number of important partners in Mexico, including the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Mexican Institute of Petroleum (IMP), the Mexican Center for Innovation in Bioenergy (CEMIE-Bio), and the National Institute of Electricity and Clean Energy (INEEL). In particular, UAlberta and the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Tec), also known as Tecnológico de Monterrey, share a number of activities related to mobility, research, education, and other collaboration.

UAlberta is heavily involved in the Mexican energy sector, working on initiatives that range from research and innovation to graduate education and short-term professional development. The majority of the initiatives revolve around collaboration in the hydrocarbon sector, but important linkages also exist in the areas of Carbon Capture Sequestration and Storage (CCUS), Bioenergy, and Grids and Storage.

Brazil

As part of the Brazilian government's Science Without Borders program, launched in 2012, UAlberta received 230 Brazilian students over a period of four years, strengthening the university's existing connections with Brazil.

More recently, UAlberta has been connecting with Brazilian institutions through the Brazilian government’s CAPES PrInt research internationalization program, which supports faculty and graduate student mobility and research projects.

Through the Worldwide Universities Network, UAlberta has strong ties with the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). Joint and dual graduate degree programs with the University of São Paulo and University of Campinas (UNICAMP) provide graduate students with opportunities to study in both Canada and Brazil.

UAlberta's Faculty of Nursing maintains strong connections with University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto Medical School, the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul for both research and graduate education.

Canada–Pacific Alliance Scholarship Program (CPASP)

UAlberta has close relationships with institutions in Latin America through its management of the Canada–Pacific Alliance Scholarship Program (CPASP). The five-year program contributed to the capacity of governments in Pacific Alliance countries (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru) to sustainably manage and regulate their extractive sectors for the benefit of their nations, including not only economic development, but also environmental stewardship, social justice, and gender equality. This program was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada provided through Global Affairs Canada.
