Hazards aren't restricted to laboratories. Wherever you work, implement the following best practices for hazard management:
- Conduct a hazard assessment with your coworkers.
- Report all incidents and near-miss events involving university personnel or property.
- Review what to do in case of an off-campus incident or emergency.

International work
Student groups take on exciting projects and innovative research. Before you get started, do the following:
- Conduct a hazard assessment:
- Identify hazards, assess their risk and assign controls to minimize danger to yourself and to others.
- Use the Hazard Assessment Web App (HAWApp), an online tool for developing, maintaining and sharing hazard assessments.
- Inspect your work area: Using your hazard assessment as a checklist, conduct scheduled inspections to verify that controls are present. Where the inspection notes a deficiency or a missing control, resolve that quickly before continuing the hazardous work.
- Report incidents: After an injury or incident involving property damage, environmental release or near-miss, complete an HSE incident report open in a new tab. Investigate what led to the incident to determine your corrective actions, and then implement those actions.
In case of serious injury, hospitalization, fire or flood that could or did cause injury, notify HSE immediately by phone at 780-492-4855 (the U of A Control Centre) and request a call back from the on-call HSE person.
