Other leave provisions are available to support staff, academic staff and management and professional staff (MAPS).

Support Staff
Special Leave
Special leave provisions can be found in Article 16 Part A Operating and Article 9 Part B Trust of the NASA/Board of Governors Collective Agreement. Special leave encompasses compassionate leave, family medical appointments, emergency or disaster conditions, birth or adoption, moving and citizenship hearing.
Leave Without Pay
An application for leave without pay is subject to the approval of the employer/trustholder. Applications should be made in writing and submitted to your direct supervisor.

Provided is a listing of the other leave provisions available to our various academic staff groups. These provisions include assisted leave, political leave and other leave including Compassionate Care and Emergency Leave (CCEL).
Faculty
Assisted Leave Article 8.04
- Helps members pursue advanced graduate study.
- Applications are made to the department chair/supervisor c/o Employment Services.
- Salary is 50% of pay, reduced by certain other income.
Political Leave Article 8.05
- Unpaid leave to run for or hold political office.
- Application should be submitted to the dean or vice-president c/o Employment Services.
Other Leaves Article 8.08
- The provost may grant discretionary leave with pay, with partial pay or without pay for prescribed periods and purposes.
- Applications should be submitted to Chair/supervisor, who forwards application with chair's and dean's recommendation to the provost, c/o Employment Services.
- Secondments may be approved by the department chair or supervisor.

Compassionate Care + Emergency Leave
The Compassionate Care and Emergency Leave (CCEL) allows benefit eligible academic staff members up to six months of leave to attend to an emergency situation. The time off during CCEL may be paid or unpaid.
CCEL can only be used in cases of catastrophic illness or family emergency situations where you have become the primary person responsible for care and support of a family member.

Management + Professional Staff
Other Leave
Employees may be granted leave with pay, partial pay, or without pay for a prescribed period and purpose. Management and professional staff (MAPS) are entitled to unpaid leaves in accordance with the Employment Standards Code .
Consult Article 16 of the MAPS Handbook for more information.
Personal Leave Days
Full-time employees are eligible for five personal leave days per vacation year (July 1 to June 30).
Use personal leave days for conducting personal business and/or meeting family responsibilities.
Consult Article 18 of the MAPS Handbook and the corresponding section in the MAPS Benefits Overview for more information on the intent of personal leave days.
Professional + Educational Leave
Professional and educational leaves may be granted to continuing employees who pursue an educational and/or professional opportunity that has proven value to the university. The Vice-President decides whether or not to grant the leave.
Applying
Your application must include:
- a description of the intended leave activity.
- a statement of benefit and value to the employee and the university.
- the duration of the leave.
- your location(s) during the leave period.

Eligibility
You are eligible to apply for up to six months of leave if you have worked at the university for three years. You are eligible to apply for up to 12 months of leave if you have worked for the university for six years. Your leave can be spread out over a number of years, depending on eligibility.
During your leave:
- you will receive a salary of 80% of your base salary.
- you will continue to receive benefits coverage.
- you cannot take alternative employment without advance approval.
- you may receive grants, scholarships and other outside aid to assist in financing your leave. Your leave salary will not be reduced unless your outside assistance and your leave salary, when combined, exceed your regular salary.

Prior to your leave, you must sign a return to service agreement. After your leave, you must submit a report to your manager or supervisor and the Vice-President on your activities during the leave within two months of your return.
Compassionate Care + Emergency Leave

Protected Leaves
Pursuant to the Alberta Employment Standards Code, job-protected leaves provide employees time off to deal with life events. All employees who have been employed with the University for more than 90 are eligible for most job protected leaves. Leaves are unpaid, but in some cases income support may be available from Employment Insurance. Refer to Job Protected Leaves for details about each type of job-protected leave.
