Tuition Remission
Eligibility and coverage levels for this benefit is based on your staff group and appointment type.
Eligible Courses
- University of Alberta credit-only courses, including Master’s-level credit courses within the Faculty of Extension.
- The Faculty of Extension's non-credit courses and programs (seminars, certificates or diplomas) do not qualify.
What is Covered?
- Program fees and market modifiers.
What is Not Covered?
- International differential fees.
- Books and class supplies.
- Penalties incurred if you do not pay any other fees required by the payment deadline.
How to Apply
- Apply to the University of Alberta.
- Once you are accepted, pay the tuition deposit, if applicable, to accept your offer of admission.
- Complete the Request for Remission of Tuition form.
- Submit the form to your department head or chair for approval and signature.
- Register in your course(s).
- Send your approved Request for Remission of Tuition form to Shared Services, Fresh Service, Finance Services, Student Receivables.
- This form serves as payment of tuition.
- Your form is due to Student Receivables by the tuition deadline each term.
Tuition remission covers tuition costs for credit-only courses (up to the allotted amount specified within the collective agreements). Master's level credit courses within the Faculty of Extension will be considered eligible for tuition remission; Faculty of Extension's non-credit courses and programs (seminars, certificates, diplomas) do not qualify.
Tuition remission will cover your program fees and market modifiers (up to the allotted amount specified within your collective agreement), however, tuition remission does not cover international differential fees.
You are responsible for paying all other fees by the payment deadline; otherwise, penalties will apply. You are also responsible for purchasing your books and class supplies.
To apply, complete the Request for Remission of Tuition. All forms are due to Financial Services by the tuition deadline each term.
Academic Staff
Employees hired under the Administrative and Professional Officer (APO), Academic Teaching Staff (ATS), Faculty, Faculty Service Officer (FSO), Librarian and Trust/Research Academic Staff (TRAS) agreements are eligible for the equivalent of four undergraduate Arts courses per year.
Support Staff
After one year of service, full-time operating and trust support staff members are eligible for 18 credits per year and part time operating and trust support staff members are eligible for three credits per year.
Management and Professional Staff
Employees are eligible for the equivalent of four single-term Arts courses per year.
English As a Second Language (ESL) Staff
After two years of service, full-time ESL staff members are eligible for 18 credits and part-time ESL staff members are eligible for three credits.
