Graduate Student Supervision Workshop

Description

The quality of supervision of graduate students is receiving increased attention in educational circles and by funding agencies. Current trends are toward a more holistic view of supervision for thesis-based students and the development of best practices in student-centered supervision. This course is designed to provide insight, resources, and discussion on relevant topics of supervision, and to help participants develop their own individual Philosophy of Mentorship. This workshop starts with self-assessment, moves to online modules, followed up with a group session covering some case studies and discussion on possible ways to deal with commonly occurring issues related to graduate education. The focus for these discussions will be integrating "Student Centered Supervision” in the training model inherent in biomedical research.

Format

  • Individual self-reflection exercise on your current attitudes toward supervision in graduate education.
  • A series of online modules that introduce concepts of supervision, mentorship, and student-centered education.
  • Concluding with a facilitated Zoom meeting to discuss best practices in mentorship and case studies.

Objectives

  • To spur reflection and ultimately the creation of an individual “philosophy of mentorship” for faculty who currently conduct or plan to conduct graduate students under their supervision.
  • To introduce to supervisors their responsibilities and those of their students during their training program.
  • To introduce concepts of good mentorship principles and skills to supervisors
  • To introduce the approach of student-centered mentorship.
  • To provide concepts of best practices in mentorship and mistakes to avoid with students under your supervision.
  • To provide information on relevant resources to assist supervisors and graduate program directors in their education of graduate students.
  • To provide a forum for discussion with multiple supervisors on their experiences in supervision, and their response to several different scenarios that are often encountered by supervisors.

Target Audience

All faculty members in FoMD who currently or plan to supervise graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, or even undergrad (MD or DDS) students in a research project.
