Co-op Work Permit

Last updated: November 2024

A co-op work permit is required for international students admitted to a program that has a mandatory practicum, field experience, or internship component. A co-op work permit allows you to engage in part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid placement. To apply you need a letter from your department/faculty stating you are registered/admitted to an Internship/Co-op Program or a program where the work component is an essential part of the program.

The letter must confirm:

  • The internship/co-op placement is an integral part of your program of study (you will not be able to graduate from your program if you do not complete the work placement component)
  • The amount of work is not more than 50% of the total program of study (e.g., an internship can not be longer than 24 months in a four-year program)

Starting Your Co-op Placement

Can I Start My Placement Before Receiving My Co-op Work Permit?

The Government of Canada has introduced temporary measures allowing students to begin their co-op work placement before their co-op work permit is issued. The conditions for starting your co-op vary depending on its location:

For Students In Canada

  • On-Campus Co-op Placements
    • You may begin working full-time.
    • There are no restrictions on work hours for on-campus placements.
  • Off-Campus Co-op Placements
    • You may work a total of 24 hours per week during an academic term or semester.
    • You are not allowed to take on any additional off-campus employment while on your co-op placement.
    • If your placement occurs during scheduled breaks, you may work full-time.
For Students Outside of Canada
  • You may begin the placement if your school and employer agree to work remotely for a Canadian employer or complete the placement with a company in your home country.
