Should you be studying in Canada for more than six months, you need a valid study permit during your studies. This includes degree-seeking students, ESL, and visiting/exchange students. You are responsible for ensuring your study permit is valid at all times.

Renew your study permit as early as possible since the processing time may take a few months (typically, 3 months before the expiration date; in certain cases, you may need to submit your application earlier than that depending on your situation). 

How to extend

Depending on your home country, you'll need either a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. Check the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website to find out which category you fall under.

How to apply

Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a requirement for all visa-exempt foreign nationals entering Canada by air. To determine whether you need an eTA, visit Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. There are no changes to entering Canada if you are travelling by land or sea.

PGWP may be issued for a maximum of 3 years if the program of study is at least 2 years long. If the programs of study are less than 2 years (but not shorter than 8 months) student may be eligible to receive a PGWP that matches the exact length of the study program completed.

How to apply

Students studying in a program that requires a co-op, internship, or practicum placement as part of their curriculum must apply for a Co-op Work Permit. Co-op Work Permits are for programs with mandatory work components such as co-op/internship programs or programs with practicums only.
