EPCOR power feeder cable replacement

19 August 2024

MAINTENANCE DETAILS

As part of an program to enhance reliability, EPCOR and U of A's Electrical Utilities are in a multi-year process of replacing all of the power cables for each of the six utility power supplies feeding the North Campus (G2, G3, G5, G7, G9, G10).

September 3–October 30, 2024: Replacement of cable G3
October 28–December 20, 2024: Replacement of cable G9

WHO IS AFFECTED

All customers connected to the North Campus District Energy System.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT

There are no planned power interruptions to district energy services because of this work.

Numerous steps have been taken to maintain a high level of system reliability during these cable replacements. However, in the unlikely event of an unplanned power outage during these transitions, power restoration may take more time than usual. Ensure you have a uninterruptible power supply (UPS) set up for any devices that cannot risk being shut down during a power interruption.

There will be some periodic traffic disruptions during this time.

Mid-September (plus two days in August) - Due to the underground routing of these feeders, there will be periodic restrictions of the 112 Street Southbound lane between 85 and 86 Avenue. The majority of this work has been scheduled between 7pm and 6am to minimize impacts.

November - There will be periodic lane restriction at the 112 Street and 84 Avenue intersection, as well as the Canadian Blood Services - Marshall Eliuk Centre parking lot North entrance on 84 Avenue. This will be nearly identical to the closures that occurred in mid-March this year.
