In your opinion, what makes this faculty unique?
Our faculty is a smaller one at the University of Alberta but we are so diverse! There are a variety of educational opportunities from the various professors, varsity coaches and graduate students that lend their knowledge to our faculty. The research that is conducted within our faculty is also one of a kind as it spans across various disciplines and is the best of it's kind in Canada. Our dedication to research also allows for more interaction with the public, which means we get opportunities to learn outside of the classroom.
Why did you choose the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation for your undergraduate degree?
I was drawn to the faculty because of their specific undergraduate degree programs. Before I knew the exact occupation I wanted to assume in my future, I knew I wanted focus on public health and rehabilitation. Our faculty is dedicated to the study of physical health and its importance in society, so naturally it seemed like the perfect fit for me.
What attracted you to your program?
I chose the BARST degree for the recreation portion of the program, more specifically for recreation therapy. The U of A is one of the few schools in Alberta that offers courses to become a fully certified rec therapist. The structure of the program also allowed me to take classes that would supplement a career in therapeutic recreation such as anatomy, physiology and multiple psychologies.
What is the most rewarding thing about being an undergraduate student in the faculty?
Definitely the opportunity for hands on learning experiences. I have been involved in a variety of different research projects and each endeavor exposes me to the diverse perspectives of my peers and professors. Working collectively with the other students in my faculty has introduced me to some of my best friends that I can't imagine life without.
Can you give an example of a memorable experience while in the faculty?
Last year in my program planning class, my classmates and I were responsible for organizing a National Sports Day event in November for 400 youth here in the city. The event evolved into what was coined "U of PlAy Day" and although it took a lot of elbow grease, the event ended up being a huge success. The event continues to remind me that the best way to learn is through personal experience.
What advice would you give someone who is considering applying to the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation?
Don't be afraid to take that jump and apply! Our faculty has so much to offer in all aspects of physical activity, movement, sport and recreation. This is the perfect place to start your academic journey, especially if you are passionate about public health and interdisciplinary research. Our faculty is one big happy family, so once you settle in don't hesitate to spark up a conversation with the person next to you in class. Take it from me, you won't regret it!
Where do you see yourself in five years?
After graduating and dipping my feet into the recreation therapy career world, I have plans to return to the university to complete a MSc in Occupational Therapy. I've found a passion in therapy and I would love to expand my knowledge through a master's degree. My dream is to have a career working as a therapist at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital here in Edmonton.
