I think that this faculty is unique because of its rich, extensive history and its incessant drive to advance the knowledge available in the field of Kinesiology. When it was initially established, the faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta was among the first of its kind. The same pioneering spirit that this faculty started with is still alive today, as it continues to hold a prestigious status and is recognized internationally. Innovative researchers in this faculty are well respected in their fields and also invest their time and energy into cultivating young leaders of the future.

Why did you choose the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation for your undergraduate degree?

I chose the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation for my undergraduate degree because I wanted to pursue a career in this field. I grew up playing multiple sports and have always enjoyed being an athlete. After experiencing a few injuries toward the end of high school, I became more aware of how important quality rehabilitation is. With sports having shaped a significant part of my life, I first entered this faculty with the long-term goal of pursuing a career in physiotherapy. It was my passion to provide a high level of care to individuals recovering from various injuries.

What attracted you to your program?

I was initially drawn to the Sport Performance major because I felt that it would offer me the best opportunities to pursue further graduate studies. With interests in both Physical Therapy and Sport Psychology, I felt that this major would serve as a good spring board for either route.

What is the most rewarding thing about being an undergraduate student in the faculty?

During the summer of 2017 I had the opportunity to gain firsthand research experience within the faculty. I gleaned valuable knowledge regarding the inner workings and processes involved in conducting a qualitative study. This experience has not only spurred on my academic interests, but will also further my lifelong personal development.

What advice would you give someone who is considering applying to the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation?

If you are considering applying to this faculty, my advice would be: 'go for it!' This faculty has incredible professors who are making significant impacts in their research fields, communities, and classrooms. I have had the opportunity to work alongside a few of these influential professors and this has been the highlight of my undergraduate degree.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years I hope to have completed the appropriate graduate schooling to become a sport psychology consultant who is clinically trained. I have a deep passion to blend both physical and mental health to support individuals in a holistic way.
