Why did you choose to study at the University of Alberta?
Growing up in Edmonton, the University of Alberta was always the goal. It allowed me to stay close to my family and get a great education at one of the top 5 Canadian universities.
What is it specifically, that your program offers, that attracted you?
I knew a few people that were already in the faculty and I loved the fact that it is such a tight knit community. I was excited about the fact that the faculty gave us an opportunity to meet so many different people at KSR Camp, bar events, FUGG night, etc. Being a small faculty, I found that a lot of the people you meet in first year stick with you for most of your degree making it easier to build relationships with your peers.
What were your biggest challenges of taking undergraduate classes, how did you overcome them?
University was a big adjustment for me in terms of finding the study technique that worked best for me. It required a lot of planning and scheduling so that I was able to stay on top of the material.
What has been your favourite course?
One of my favourite courses has been KIN 444 - Communication Skills and Strategies. Billy Strean does an amazing job creating a welcoming community in the classroom and teaches us about many skills that transfer into daily life. The class has not only taught me to be a more confident speaker but also how to foster stronger relationships with family and friends.
What advice do you have for new undergraduate students?
Get involved in any way you can and make connections with people! Go out to those Thursday night bar events because that might be where you meet a lifelong friend!
Secondly, there are lots of opportunities for Kin students to get involved on campus from Campus Rec to the Steadward Center and many more. Having a social and fun connection to the campus through volunteering, sports, or being in a club makes your experience even more meaningful!
What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?
I love playing soccer, working out, and hanging out with friends. Basically anything that involves being outside in warm weather.
