In your opinion, what makes this faculty unique?
It is very sociable! You get the sense that it is more than just field of education; it is also a community for like-minded individuals to interact with each other inside and outside of the classroom. The Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation Council of Students (KSRCS) plays a huge role in this by organizing events such as Rookie Camp and FUGG night. Events like these really give the faculty some heart, and it has certainly captured mine with it. What also makes this faculty unique is the quality of the instructors and professors. Everyone that I have had was very invested and passionate in the content that they taught, which helped make me equally as invested and passionate in what I was learning.
Why did you choose the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation for your undergraduate degree?
The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation was the faculty that best fit my interests and ambitions; my love for sport, physical activity, and the human body could not possibly have made the decision to choose this faculty any easier for me. In my two years here, I have absolutely loved what I have learned, whether it was subjects I was familiar with or completely brand new to.
What attracted you to your program?
The idea of studying a field that appealed to many of my interests was very attractive. I love the idea of not completely separating personal life from work, as I believe that for work to be enjoyable, it should involve what I enjoy outside of the work environment as well. I also talked to several graduates from the faculty who were professionals such as physical education teachers, athletic therapists, and physiotherapists. The common theme amongst all these people was that they very much enjoyed their time as an undergraduate student, which further encouraged me to start on a similar path.
What is the most rewarding thing about being an undergraduate student in the faculty?
Knowledge. It may sound cliché, but the feeling of fulfillment from learning about things you're passionate about is unique and exciting. It sparks my ambition of being able to apply what I learn to the "outside" world: to help individuals improve their physical health with exercise.
Can you give an example of a memorable experience while in the faculty?
Rookie Camp in my first year was definitely the most memorable experience I've had in this faculty. What an introduction to University that was! The camp itself really created the impression that this faculty is a community by inviting all students to one event; an event that helped students stay together afterwards.
What advice would you give someone who is considering applying to the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation?
If the studies offered by the faculty match their interests, I would strongly recommend that they apply. Everything from the quality of the content inside of the classroom, to the events happening outside of the classroom, make it worth doing.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I definitely see myself continuing to learn and work within this field. The great thing about this faculty is that the wide variety of subjects that are taught keep the doors open for me in deciding what exactly to narrow down my focus to. Whether I be furthering my education in graduate school, or working with clients to help improve their physical health with exercise, I am certain that I will continue to learn and better myself both personally and professionally.
