Dr. Kyra Pyke, Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (KSR), is pleased to welcome you to the 2022-2023 academic year. Dr. Pyke began her term in summer 2022 and has appreciated spending time with students, staff and faculty, and has already experienced the strong bonds of mutual support that make KSR such a unique and special community.
Dr. Pyke is a leading researcher who has worked as Director of the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen’s University, as well as Lead Investigator of the Cardiovascular Stress Response Lab. She served as a member of the Queen’s University Senate, guiding academic and policy decisions, and has been an active member of multiple faculty and departmental advisory committees. An avid believer in collegiality, she has strong experience leading institutions through periods of change.
Dr. Pyke received her PhD and MSc in Kinesiology from Queen’s, and her BA in Kinesiology from York University. Her research program explores the impacts of exercise, diet and psychosocial stress on cardiovascular function and structure in order to improve physiological measures of cardiovascular function and health. Her work on cardiovascular function in the integrated human system, supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, will continue here at the University of Alberta.
In her tenure as Dean, Dr. Pyke is enthusiastic about engaging the Faculty in renewing its strategic plan and implementing the exciting dual degree collaboration between KSR and Beijing Sport University. She looks forward to defining a collective vision for success that values and prioritizes wellbeing and EDII to support and develop the outstanding multidisciplinary research, teaching and community partnership activities in the Faculty.
