How to Apply

Application for graduate admission

Students must complete an application for graduate admission through the online system. Before applying, please read the instructions below carefully.

Upload all the required documentation to your application by the deadline listed below. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

  1. Transcripts
    Upload up-to-date, official transcripts (both in English and the language of origin, if applicable) from all post-secondary institutions you have attended, including for incomplete degrees, individual courses, and courses that were transferred to another institution. Digital transcripts are accepted as long as they are official and meet the requirements of the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies. Scan the front and back of paper transcripts. Refer to Requirements for Academic Documents for detailed instructions.

    Note: For transcripts from the University of Alberta only, you may upload up-to-date, unofficial transcripts.

  1. Degree Certificates
    Upload official degree certificates for all post-secondary degrees you have completed (both in English and the language of origin, if applicable).

    Note: A degree certificate is not required if the corresponding transcript clearly states the degree has been awarded and the date when it was awarded. If your current post-secondary program is not yet complete at the time when you apply, you do not need to upload a degree certificate for it.

  1. English Language Proficiency Scores
    English is the primary language of instruction and communication at the University of Alberta. All applicants must be proficient in English prior to admission. Proficiency is demonstrated by one of the following:

      • Possession of a post-secondary degree from a recognized English- language country (such as Canada) or institution. The country or the institution must be on the list of Recognized English Language Countries + Institutions. No additional documentation is required.
      • Possession of a post-secondary degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English but which is not on the list of recognized English-language countries and institutions. Upload proof that the instruction for the degree was in English.
      • A minimum overall Academic IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.5 on each band. Upload a copy of the score sheet.
      • A minimum overall TOEFL (internet-based) score of 95 with a minimum of 21 on each individual skill area. Upload a copy of the score sheet.

    Note: The Department of Medicine and the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral studies reserve the right to require further demonstration of English Language proficiency.

  3. Three References
    Provide email addresses for three referees. The application system will send email reference requests to your referees after you submit your application. Ensure you enter the correct email address before submitting your application. Professors, teachers, or employers are acceptable referees.

    Note: Medical residents must use their Program Director as one of the three required referees. This reference must indicate support for the applicant to enroll in a graduate program concurrent with their residency.

Reference letters must meet the following requirements to be accepted:

  • The letter is in PDF format.
  • The letter is on your referee’s official institution or company letterhead.
  • The letter is signed by your referee.

 

  1. Statement of Interest (1 or 2 pages)
    Summarize your background, interest in our program, and your career goals.

  2. Letter from Supervisor
    Provide a letter from your prospective University of Alberta supervisor confirming their agreement to supervise you and describing the sources of funding for your stipend and research program.

    Note: Do not submit an application before you have a confirmed supervisor. Your primary supervisor must be appointed to the Department of Medicine.

The letter from supervisor must meet the following requirements to be accepted:

  • The letter is on the departmental/divisional letterhead.
  • The letter is signed by your supervisor.
  • The supervisor confirms the willingness to supervise you and their agreement to fund your studies in accordance with the Department of Medicine funding policy.
  • The letter should be addressed to the Graduate Coordinators of the Department of Medicine.

 

  1. Application Fee
    A non-refundable application fee of C$135 is required. Payments can be made using a valid credit card only. The university accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discovery Card. If you have questions about the fee, please contact webadm@ualberta.ca.
