Department of Medicine Annual Reports
Dear Colleague,
I am pleased to present our online 2022 Annual Report.
Although COVID was in our “rearview mirror” in 2022, the reality in our hospitals was unprecedented numbers of patients. Delayed care during the pandemic meant sicker people, continuing the marathon pace of the previous two years. In order to survive, thrive and deliver excellent care, it was paramount that medical staff make their wellness a priority.
Wellness is a necessity for recovery on so many levels. As you will see in this annual report, it can be achieved with widespread collaboration and finding new ways to move ahead and build for the future. Our members reinvigorated and reinvested in core areas of academic medicine: clinical care, education, and research, with superb results.
While our work is supported by many benefactors, we welcome additional support with gratitude.
Sincerely,
Narmin Kassam, MD
Professor and Chair, Department of Medicine
Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta

Kidney Care in Indigenous Communities
Indigenous individuals living in remote areas, not only face limited access to quality kidney care, but also confront a significantly heightened risk of kidney disease often necessitating relocation for essential dialysis treatments. Find out how Dr. Aminu Bello, Professor in the Division of Nephrology, is leading an initiative addressing kidney health disparities in Indigenous communities.
The Health of Us All
A Dedication to Community Health
In 2022, our community was still reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need for effective measures at a population health level was great. Many practitioners and organizations stepped up and met the challenge...including the Division of Preventive Medicine with a pioneering idea that changed how we look at human waste.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Medical Education
CaRMS is a very important matching service for learners in medical training, and biases in the CaRMS selection process can positively or negatively impact their training. Our dedicated team investigated how we can enhance the fairness and equity of CaRMS for the betterment of our medical learners.
