Teaching + Learning
Five ways Augustana students are preparing for the future
During the 2021-22 academic year, Augustana helped students develop skills that will become invaluable during and following their time on campus. And, in many cases, these skills have been developed in partnership with the community.

Highlights from our research centres
Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities
This past year, the ACSRC offered community programming as part of its Rural Community Development webinar series. These webinars included “Community-led Development in Camrose: What can we learn from the Viking Cup?”, “Rethinking craft for community development,” and “Examining the outcomes of zero-fee education in building a resilient, inclusive economy in Drayton Valley.”
Augustana Miquelon Lake Research Station & Hesje Observatory
The Hesje Observatory offers in-person, public programming, and has recently started offering public drop-in hours. The research station and observatory are also developing land-based programs to provide fun, engaging STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programming to Indigenous youth.
Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life
In addition to partnering on the Indigenous Speaker Series, the Chester Ronning Centre welcomed various internationally acclaimed speakers to an online audience in 2021-22. From multidisciplinary scholar and artist Afua Cooper sharing the history of Black Loyalists in Atlantic Canada to Princeton University professor Elaine Pagels discussing religion in the 21st century, all event recordings can be watched online.
Giving Impact
Speaker series shares Indigenous knowledge with community
As was true everywhere, the COVID-19 pandemic required Augustana to adapt. When in-person events were no longer possible, campus staff worked to move programming online. That decision would eventually lead to an event that drew the largest audience in Augustana’s history – and one of the largest across the entire University of Alberta.
