What you will learn
Summary
This course covers modality three in Alberta— oral sedation for patients 12 years of age and older; and consists of an online theory and lecture (pre-study required) module in eClass followed by a scheduled clinic day. Upon completion, you will have a firm grasp of the safe administration of oral sedatives and the proper charting required.
Impact
By offering oral sedation, dental offices will better serve their nervous patients and the local community. This service empowers clinics to retain and treat patients when confronted with difficult cases or anxious patients.
Syllabus
Pre-study
Some pre-reading will be assigned before participants attend the course. To meet the potential needs of the dentists in the appropriate setting, course sizes are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Didactic and clinical session format
- Patient selection and history
- Patient evaluation and monitoring
- Medical emergency management
- Discharge considerations
- Nitrous sedation monitoring (Course participants will serve as each other’s patients)
- Oral sedation lecture
- Program participant assessment: Will include clinical performance competencies and a multiple choice written exam
Pricing and details
Prerequisites
Participants must have:
- An active practicing license from their dental regulatory authority in Canada.
- A current CPR certificate (BLS – issued within the last 12 months that will remain valid through the clinical sessions).
Valid, current documentation is required to attend this clinical course.
Cancellation and transfer policy
Due to the significant demand, scope and requirements of this program, tuition refunds will not be facilitated except in extreme circumstances. Transfer to a future session may be facilitated under certain extenuating circumstances, and with sufficient notice provided, particularly for clinical session transfers (2.5 months notice at minimum for clinical sessions, provided a spot is available in the following clinical session – transfer fee may apply).
Confirmation of registration
You will receive a confirmation email once payment has been received. All other course materials will be sent with email instructions one month before the course start date.
Attendance policy
Due to the new dental guidelines, participants must sign in before each session for proof of attendance.

Competency
Our programming is competency-based; therefore, where applicable, certification standards must be met to pass and the failure to do so does not result in refund eligibility.
Required materials
Participants must purchase the textbook Sedation: A Guide to Patient Management 6th Edition, by Dr. Stanley F. Malamed. ISBN:0323400531.
The textbook can be purchased from the University of Alberta Bookstore, Amazon or Chapters. Some pre-reading will be assigned before you attend the course.
Course materials
eClass access will be provided approximately one month before the course date.
The registration deadline is three weeks before each in-person course session date, to provide sufficient time for completing the online course and exams. Registration past this deadline may be permitted, provided the participant acknowledges they will ensure completion of the pre-study content and eClass before the clinical session.
Online materials are accessible for one year.

Dr. Gregory Austin
Periodontist
Dr. Austin, DDS, MSc, FRCD(C), graduated from the University of Western Ontario and has spent over 35 years as a periodontist in the Canadian Armed Forces, as both a civilian and a serving military member of the Royal Canadian Dental Corps.
Over his long career, he has provided hundreds of both one and two-drug IV sedation procedures. In addition to his periodontics specialty certificate from the United States Army, he holds a master of science in oral biology from the Medical College of Georgia. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and a past councillor for periodontics at the RCDC.
Austin is currently semi-retired but clinically instructs part-time in undergraduate periodontics, and is involved part-time in the postgraduate periodontics program at the University of Alberta.
