What you will learn

To ensure our participants have the clinical skills necessary for success we’ve designed this program with a team in mind. Our IV sedation program allows participants to:

  • Get to work on real patients at the commencement of the program (session three).
  • Gain support with the set-up, supplies and equipment for IV sedation.

Our integrated program merges several smaller courses and is delivered through eClass and in-person clinical learning.

Clinics that offer IV sedation can effectively manage difficult cases, anxious patients, or those who simply cannot be sedated with nitrous or oral sedatives. Our single and two-drug curriculum, nitrous oxide and oral sedation, advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), and emergency airway management training, are seamlessly integrated into one comprehensive program consisting of three sessions.

  • Session one: Nitrous and ECG interpretation
  • Session two: Mechanics and rotations, ACLS certification, IV starts practice, two-drug lectures
  • Session three: Airway management, clinical session for 21 patient sedations + concurrent care (per certification requirements)

Impact

By offering IV conscious sedation, dental offices are better able to serve their nervous patients and the local community. Offering this service empowers you to better retain and treat patients when confronted with difficult cases, anxious patients, or those that require stronger sedation options. Furthermore, you’ll be able to provide more immediate care by eliminating the need for specialists in some cases. IV sedation makes you stand out by combining improved customer service and patient care options.

To ensure our students have the clinical skills necessary for success we:

  • Requiring a minimum of 21 IV starts
  • Provide ongoing support including access to instructors and setup guidance after course completion
  • Focus on the clinical team with opportunities to train your Dental Assistants in sedation

Benefits

  • We provide supplies, instrumentation (excluding precordial stethoscopes), and prescreened sedation patients
  • Offer the option to pay in installments
  • We will deduct the cost of nitrous oxide and oral sedation if it’s been completed within the past 12 months

Train your CDAs or RDAs

Complimentary sedation assistant certificate — A $750/assistant value.

It is a requirement for session three that all participants have two registered dental assistants (RDA) to help them with cases. If participants bring their RDAs, the RDAs will receive a sedation assistant certification (SAC) once the course is complete. The U of A can provide RDAs**.
