What initially drew you to this area of study?

The focus on both personal and community health within dental hygiene resonated with me. I wanted the opportunity to connect with every patient and make a difference in their life.

What achievement, accomplishment or moment are you most proud of from your time in the program?

I am proud and grateful to have been part of the team that piloted the first Access for All dentistry trip, which is a student-led initiative that provides free dental care to rural Alberta communities.

What was the biggest challenge you faced?

Managing the heavy workload and stress of school while trying to maintain mental health and being active in the community was very challenging.

How did you stay motivated and who helped you keep going when things got tough?

I was able to lean on both my peers and faculty members throughout the program when I needed motivation or encouragement. In particular, the professors and faculty members are the strength of this program and the ones who put so much effort into making sure their students are successful.

What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering this program of study/specialization?

Some advice I would give to someone entering this program is not to forget the reason why you want to become a dental hygienist and the impact you want to have — whatever it may be. It will help you get through and put things into perspective when the workload gets challenging. Also, lean on your classmates and professors. You are all on the same team, working towards the same goal, and they want to see you be successful.

What have you learned about yourself, and how will you use this going forward?

I have learned about the importance of asking for help. When struggling with low confidence and a heavy workload I realized I am a better student and all-around person when I can confide in and reach out for support to those around me.

What comes next for you in your career/academic journey?

I have a passion for working rurally and increasing opportunities for people who struggle to get access to dental care. I hope to gain valuable experience working rurally for the next couple of years and then perhaps come back to the university to pursue becoming an instructor.
