School of Dentistry Internal Endowed Grant Recipients

The School of Dentistry is delighted to announce the recipients of our Internal Endowed Grants. 

• Dr. Maryam Amin and team (Devarasa Giriyapura Murugeshappa and Dr. Arnaldo Perez) were awarded a major SoD internal fund, the Community and Population Oral Health Research Fund, for their study entitled “Role of social media in underserved adolescents’ oral health behaviours: A mixed methods study.” This sizable grant was made possible by the Rowland and Muriel Haryett Oral Health Community Engagement Fund (RMHOH) and the Oral Health for Children, Youth & Families Research Fund (OHCYFF).

• Dr. Disha Nagpal and team ( Dr. Liran Levin and Dr. Arto Ohinmaa) were awarded a Fund for Dentistry grant for their study entitled “The cost-effectiveness of tooth preservation vs. implant placement in severe periodontal disease patients: A comprehensive economical model.”

• Dr. Fabiana Almeida and team (Dr. Paul Major and Dr. Jhoyli Labrador-Stacey) were awarded a Fund for Dentistry grant for their study entitled “Usefulness of artificial intelligence in the evaluation of periodontal landmarks in ultrasound images.”

• Dr. Hollis Lai and team (Rojin Adabdokht and Dr. Ida Kornerup) were awarded the Oral Health Community Engagement grant for their study entitled “Application of deep learning models for children’s dental anxiety assessment.”

• Dr. Ida Kornerup and team (Mehdi Salehi Zeinabadi, Dr. Camila Pacheco, Dr. Hollis Lai and Dr. Manuel Lagravere) were awarded a Fund for Dentistry grant for their study entitled “Comparison of MI paste plus and resin infiltration in improvement of white spot lesions following fixed orthodontic treatment: a randomized controlled trial.”

• Dr. Manuel Lagravere and team (Mahshid Nik Ravesh, Dr. Hollis Lai and Dr. Ida Kornerup) were awarded a Fund for Dentistry grant for their study entitled “Application of deep learning models to determine midpalatal suture maturation stage on CBCT.”

• Dr. Sharon Compton and team (Dr. Minn Yoon, Dr. Monica Gibson, Dr. Kimi Khabra and Dr. Hollis Lai) were awarded the Geriatric Oral Health Research grant for their study entitled “A pilot study in continuing care facilities to assess the oral health status of residents with and without dental implants.”

“We are incredibly proud of all our Internal Endowed Grant recipients. These grants will help our research teams continue to conduct groundbreaking and innovative work that will impact our understanding of many aspects related to oral health and advance dental health care practice,” said Dr. Maryam Amin, Associate Chair of Research in the Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. “I look forward to seeing the findings that stem from these projects and send congratulations to all of our Internal Endowed Grant winners on their achievements!”
