Fresh Faces Fall 2022: Fatima Rehan, Dental Hygiene
24 October 2022
Fatima Rehan embarked on her first year at the University of Alberta’s dental hygiene program this fall, following a pre-professional year in biological sciences in her hometown at the University of Calgary. A devout foodie, she’s looking forward to getting to know Edmonton’s restaurant scene while following her passion to help and educate people about tooth care.
What made you choose the U of A?
Choosing to attend the U of A's dental hygiene program made sense for me since it provides students with valuable patient interaction, teaches them the theory and science behind what they do, and has ongoing research studies on oral health.
What inspired you to go into dental hygiene?
Helping and educating people is something I am passionate about. Since so much of your health originates in your mouth, you can seriously benefit patients by helping to clean teeth and identifying any issues. Besides teaching them how to take better care of their teeth, you also inform them on how to take better care of their oral health in the long run.
The immense potential for advancement in this field inspires me to pursue a master's degree and research, which will allow me to move into positions of leadership and education.
What are you most excited about as you get started?
I am excited to meet new people and make long-lasting connections.
What do you think will be the biggest challenges?
Getting used to the city culture and living away from my family and friends will be the biggest challenges for me as I pursue my degree. However, I look forward to meeting new people at the U of A.
How do you unwind when you're not busy with your studies?
Going for walks while listening to podcasts is one of my favourite ways to unwind. I can move my body while learning something fun and interesting at the same time. For fun, I love to bake. Cupcakes, cakes, cookies, brownies, pizzas, bread, you name it! I love how all the ingredients have exact measurements when baking and the product always tastes delicious. Decorating my creation is a bonus!
