The Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) established the W.W. Wood Award for "Excellence in Dental Education" to commemorate Dr. Bill Wood whose academic career exemplified dedication to research, teaching and service. And Lockwood’s passion for dental hygiene and teaching exemplifies embodies exactly this.
Described as a passionate ambassador of the dental hygiene program by her students, and a professor who is dedicated to helping her students be successful, Lockwood says she feels honoured and humbled to be receiving the award.
“Being recognized and congratulated by the amazing people who I have learned so much from is very special,” says Lockwood. “This award is a recognition that my time here teaching and working to do my best, I have been appreciated. It is amazing to be recognized and I am very grateful for that.”
Experience. Knowledge. Compassion and approachability. These are the four pillars of Lockwood’s personal teaching philosophy which she brings to the classroom every day.
Lockwood’s commitment to academia, students and colleagues is further cemented in the fact that she has been the recipient of many awards. She was the recipient of the CRDHA Marilyn Pawluk Mabey Award in 2010, DSA Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012, Gibb Clinical Teaching Award in 2015, DSA Excellence in Teaching Award again in 2015, and as Honorary Dental Hygiene Class President in 2016. The frequency and consistency of being recognized over many years is evidence of her teaching effectiveness.
“As an educator, I enjoy watching the growth of my students the most,” says Lockwood. “I have been heavily involved with preclinical and early clinic learning over the years and every year it is amazing to witness their growth from a student to a competent healthcare professional.”
