Chair's Message
We had a very exciting September - new students, new book, the centennial gala and the unveiling of our museum display.
We had over 200 people attend the centennial gala which made for a good evening of visiting and comradery. I overheard many conversations with friends and colleagues looking at their grad photos and reminiscing about their time in dental school. It was a good to see so many staff, alumni and friends.
Our centennial book, ROOTs, is now available for purchase. The book is narrative journey with some surprising tales rather than a historical timeline of events. Part of the reason for this approach is because of the lack of records to draw on to create an accurate timeline and it was agreed that a narrative would be much more of an interesting read. The unveiling of the dental museum display took place September 20. It is on the second floor of ECHA, and while some of the pieces were donated we did bring over quite a bit of the collection that currently resides in the Clinical Sciences Building. Dr. Loren Kline is the curator of the museum today and was instrumental in securing space in the Clinical Sciences Building for all of our museum pieces.
Through this display, the School is pleased to be able to acknowledge individuals like Dr. Sperber who has tirelessly promoted the importance of our museum from the moment we received notice we were on the move from the old dent/pharm building.
This display is named after Dr. Sperber for his relentless pursuit of our museum.
I would also like to acknowledge Dr. Ivano Ongaro, who in addition to his clinical dental expertise, is a passionate artist, in particular, sculpting. He has graciously donated the meticulously carved sculpture of our School of Dentistry founder, Dr. Harry Bulyea. Thank you Dr. Ongaro for your time in creating something for our school that reflects our history and the individual that got it all started.
