Congratulations to Dr. Ivano Ongaro for winning the W.W. Wood Award. The Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) has established the W.W. Wood Awards for "Excellence in Dental Education" to commemorate Dr. Bill Wood whose academic career exemplified dedication to research, teaching and service.
Dr. Ongaro is an excellent teacher, mentor and role model. He has been a CCD Leader for five years and is the course coordinator for DDS 545 Diagnosis and Treatment Planning. He has recently implemented Grand Rounds in Diagnosis to increase student participation and improve learning. Dr. Ongaro is extremely knowledgeable about his subject matter and has extensive clinical experience as a rural dental practitioner. He is very passionate and enthusiastic about teaching. Dr. Ongaro has participated in ADEA/ AAL training to develop his skills as a clinical instructor, course coordinator and educator.
Dr. Ongaro has an amazing relationship with the students. He is well respected for his dental knowledge and excellent clinical skills. He communicates well with the students and is always available to discuss cases and share his expertise. Dr. Ongaro also makes himself accessible when the students require guidance and support. He is very honest and provides valuable constructive feedback to help students improve their skills. Dr. Ongaro expects students to set high goals and he encourages them to strive for a standard of excellence. Dr. Ongaro has the ability to motivate students to be the best they can be.
Dr. Ongaro has been very involved in program development at the University of Alberta, School of Dentistry. He is a member on the Clinic Operations Committee, Academic Standing Committee and the Curriculum Renewal Committee. His expertise and input have been very valuable. He has the ability to think outside the box and formulate solutions to challenges.
In addition to his clinical dental expertise, is a passionate artist, in particular, sculpting. He has graciously donated the meticulously carved sculpture of our School of Dentistry founder, Dr. Harry Bulyea.
