The School of Dentistry now has a new Oral Medicine Graduate Program. The program builds upon the framework of their previous TMD/Orofacial Pain program and will incorporate the additional scope of clinical competencies to provide the graduate(s) with eligibility for Oral Medicine specialist certification by the Royal College of Dentists.
The program is intended for dental graduates interested in the investigation and management of oral diseases (including manifestations of systemic diseases); investigation and management of orofacial pain; and the planning of comprehensive dental care for medically complex patients. In addition to the mentored clinical experience and didactic elements of the training, the graduate(s) student will also complete an MSc research thesis project.
Dr. Tim McGaw, professor in Oral Medicine and Pathology at the school, will be the director of the program.
"I'm really excited to be part of this new grad program," said Tim McGaw. "The legacy of our excellent TMD/Orofacial Pain program, and the integration of our School of Dentistry within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, has provided us with a unique opportunity."
This program is a much needed dental specialty as there is an increased need for cooperation between practitioners of oral health care and physicians dealing with complex medical cases.
"Thank you to all of the faculty members who have done outstanding work to create this program," said Paul Major, chair of the School of Dentistry. "The development of this program is aligned with our strategic vision and helps drive our research portfolio."
The school will admit its first student in September 2015.
