Habitat for Humanity
19 June 2013
Dentistry staff participated in the "Give, Grow, Play" initiative through the University. Three staff members, Daniel, Lori, and Melanie C, joined approximately 15 other University staff to help with a Habitat for Humanity house build project.
There were a total of five groups from the Edmonton area. Once they received safety training and were shown how to use the power tools, the dentistry crew were tasked with framing walls for a section of units that will eventually become homes for handicapped owners. Eventually, there will be 40 units in the complex they worked on.
The families themselves will also have to put in 500 hours of "sweat equity", and they will receive a low mortgage rate when they purchase their home. Their mortgage payments are then put back into Habitat for Humanity and help build more houses.
The local church supplied a delicious perogie lunch with veggies and dessert. It was a great day for the group, and they accomplished what they set out to do and more.
If you are interested in helping out, it does not have to be through work, and you can go as a group of friends too, or bring your family. Visit www.habitat.ca to learn more. For more photos click here.
