Cleaning Guide

This cleaning checklist encompasses both residence halls and apartments. Please complete all items applicable to your unit type. All roommates (if applicable) are responsible for cleaning.

Room

  • Move furniture back to its original position (charges may apply to missing or rearranged furniture)
  • Sweep/vacuum floor
  • Remove all personal items from closet, cupboards and drawers
  • Remove all items from walls (posters, stickers, tape, tacks, etc.)
  • With a wet cloth, wipe down:
    • Walls
    • Doors (both sides)
    • Shelves and the inside and outside of cupboards and drawers
    • Mirrors
    • Windows
    • Ledges
    • Heating vents
    • Furniture (bed, desk, chair, couch, etc.)

Items that should remain in your unit, in their original position when you moved in (charges may apply for missing or rearranged furniture):

  • Mattress, mattress frame, mattress cover
  • Garbage can
  • Desk, lamp and bookcase
  • Chair
  • Curtains and rod or blinds
  • All original washroom accessories (Schäffer, Résidence Saint-Jean + International House)
  • Mini-fridge (International House)
  • Floor mat (Lister + Résidence Saint-Jean)
  • Power bar (Résidence Saint-Jean)
  • Clothes drying rack (Résidence Saint-Jean)
  • Recycling box (Résidence Saint-Jean)

WASHROOM

Only applicable to units with a private washroom or one shared between roommates. Not applicable for washrooms shared by a floor.

Thoroughly clean any soap scum, hair, standing water, dust, dirt and grime.

  • Toilet (inside and out)
  • Sink and faucet
  • Shower head, faucet, control, door and tracks
  • Bathtub and tiles
  • Vanity counter and cupboards
  • Vanity counter and cupboards
  • Ceiling vent
  • Mirrors

KITCHEN/LIVING AREA

Thoroughly clean any food residue, grease, dust, dirt and grime.

  • Remove all food, dishes and utensils
  • Wipe cupboards (inside and outside)
  • Stove/oven (cooled down, if recently used)
    • Remove elements and trays from stove top, soak in hot soapy water and scrub clean
    • With a mask and rubber gloves, spray oven, burner drip trays and oven racks with oven cleaner (follow instructions/safety precautions on the oven cleaner label)
    • Remove all cleaning residue
    • Pull the stove away from the wall and clean all outside surfaces of the stove, hood fan, walls, floor and countertops.
  • Fridge
    • Remove all food from fridge & freezer
    • Wipe and clean all surfaces, racks, crisper bins, & door shelves (including door seal)
    • Pull fridge away from the wall & clean all outside surfaces including the floor Defrost mini-fridge, make sure it's clean and dry, and leave it unplugged (International House)

Shared Spaces

  • Ensure you have contributed to your floor cleaning (see your RA for details)
  • Remove all personal items from common areas - Remove food from the fridge, freezer, cupboards and drawers, clean these areas. Do not leave any items for new residents to “possibly use” - you will be charged if cleaners have to remove these items.
  • Remove all personal items from the storage room

GENERAL

  • Remove all personal furniture and items from your unit (check all drawers and closet)
  • Close your windows and turn off all the lights
  • Lock your door when you leave your unit
  • Remove and dispose of all garbage, recycling and unwanted items properly. Frozen and refrigerated foods must not be left in the kitchen to spoil. They must be disposed of as soon as possible in the bins located on the main level outside each residence. Charges will be assessed to you and/or your floor for improper disposal.
  • Hand in your room, unit and mail keys to your Residence Services Office by noon on your move-out day. Failure to do so will result in an improper check out fee of $85.00 and possible lock change charges. Once your keys are returned to Residence Services upon move out you are not permitted to return to your room/unit.
