Deputy Dean
Thomas Stelfox, MD, PhD
Dr. Thomas Stelfox joined the University of Alberta as deputy dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry on Sept. 1, 2023. Previously, at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine, he was a professor of critical care medicine and director of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health.
He received his MD from the University of Alberta, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Toronto, earned a PhD in health-care policy at Harvard University and did a critical care fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He previously served as joint clinical and academic chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services.
His research focuses on the application of health-services research methods to improve the quality of health-care delivery to critically ill patients. Dr. Stelfox has more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, over $25 million in funding as principal or co-principal applicant and $80 million in network and training grants as co-applicant. The findings from his work have impacted health policy and patient care.
As a proud alumnus of our MD program, Dr. Stelfox has strong ties in Edmonton and is thrilled to be returning to the Faculty to support our collective work.
