The Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) is a unique bi-national organization, mandated by governments of India and Canada to promote, facilitate and nurture academic linkages, collaborations & exchanges, research partnerships, and networks on bi-national corridors. With its physical presence in New Delhi, India and Calgary, Canada, and a strong base of 154 Indian and 40 Canadian member institutions, for past 55 years, SICI is the only organization in the Canada-India higher education corridor that is instrumental in building and strengthening intellectual and cultural relationship through research and dialogue. Funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, it supports diverse disciplines including Social Sciences, Humanities, Science & Technology, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Arts, Literature, Culture, Law, Business, Economic Reform, etc. and covers all levels of higher education from undergraduate to postdoc and from faculty to collaborative research.
Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (SICI) is providing an exciting India-bound mobility opportunity for young Albertan undergraduate students starting in the summer of 2024, the Shastri Alberta Students in India (SASI) Project 2024-25. This initiative provides grants and support for an 8-week work internship to post-secondary students from Alberta in distinguished Indian institutions under the guidance of host faculty members.
This internship offers work-integrated learning experiences within esteemed Indian institutions including Universities, IITs, for-profit and non-profit organizations.
Students will have a comprehensive experience that fuels personal, academic, and professional growth. Objectives include:
- Immerse Alberta post-secondary students in an impactful 8-week work and socio-cultural venture in India, fostering global competencies, adaptability, and an international mindset.
- Deliver hands-on training and work exposure through projects with esteemed Indian institutions across industries, honing practical skills and industry-specific knowledge to meet global workforce demands.
- Foster intercultural, interpersonal, and cross-cultural communication skills by placing students in collaborative environments with diverse, multicultural teams.
With SICI's comprehensive support, students can choose their desired host institution and projects from a curated list of INTERNSHIP PROJECTS.

Internship Duration: 8 weeks from July 1 - August 23, 2024
Eligibility Requirements
Open to: All faculties, students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents
Level: Undergraduate (2nd year +)
- After completing SICI's Work-Internship Project in India, applicant students must return to their respective home institutions to complete their remaining semester(s).
- Proficiency in the English language is required.
- Students with any previous academic degrees/diplomas from Indian institutions are not eligible.
- Financially challenged and Indigenous students are highly encouraged to apply.
Internship Information
Language of Instruction: English
Funding: There are 30 Internship placements available that provide funding. The total funding per participant is $8500 and will cover the cost of air travel, ground transportation, rent, visas, vaccines, health insurance, and a stipend.
Application Instructions
Students will submit the Application Form and Letter of Reference Form on HORIZONS by 11:59pm on March 10th. Nominations will then be provided to SICI. Students will be notified of selection by March 25, 2024.
*reference can be from academic, professional, or volunteer experience - students can have the reference form completed by a professor/course instructor, or supervisor from a work/volunteer experience.
Funding Opportunities
Students receive on average between $1,400-$2,000 in funding.
