Residents Awards

Applications for all awards are due in April of the calendar year they will be presented. 

Details will be sent out each March with the application forms.

CFPC Family Medicine Resident Award for Scholarly Achievement

This award is supported by the Foundation for Advancing Family Medicine of The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

The CFPC Family Medicine Resident Award for Scholarly Achievement recognizes outstanding academic accomplishments by family medicine residents (R1, R2, R3). This award is intended to stimulate family medicine research and innovation in education. One recipient or team from each faculty of family medicine across Canada will be selected.

In addition to this award, all nominations submitted on behalf Francophone family medicine residents will be forwarded to the Awards Committee of the Quebec College of Family Physicians for the selection of the Nadine St-Pierre Award, which focuses on the best scholarly work of an outstanding Francophone family medicine resident in Canada. To be considered for a Nadine St-Pierre Award, the nomination must include a full manuscript in French describing the scholarly work.

Eligibility:

Family medicine residents (First, Second, or Third year)

Selection Process:

The chairs, postgraduate directors, and research directors from each Canadian family medicine residency program are asked to identify the department’s best scholarly work by one of their residents, using the department’s own criteria. Their nominee will become their school’s recipient of a Family Medicine Resident Award for Scholarly Achievement.

Submission Requirements:

1) A brief biography or curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages).

2) A 300 word abstract or description of the scholarly project, or a full manuscript (a full manuscript in French is needed to be considered for the Nadine St-Pierre Award; to be considered for the Nadine St-Pierre Award, the nomination must also include a reflective piece from the author(s)).

Award

This award has no cash value. Award recipients will receive a certificate and their names and project titles will be posted in the research section of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) website.

CPFC Research Award for Family Medicine Residents

The Research Award for Family Medicine Residents recognizes family medicine residents (R1 or R2) for excellent research carried out and completed prior to June 1, 2023.

The award will be presented at the 2023 Family Medicine Forum (FMF) conference (November 8-11, 2023, Montreal, QC).

Eligibility:

• Family medicine residents (R1 or R2) who have completed a research project in 2022-2023.
• Residents in a third-year training program are not eligible.
• Applicants cannot have received this award in the past three years.

Selection Process:

The Chairs and Research Directors of each family medicine residency program will identify the most outstanding research project from their program in 2022-2023. The CFPC Section of Researchers will recommend the recipients of these awards to the national Honours & Awards Committee.

Submission Requirements:

1) A brief curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages) for each eligible resident member of the research team.

2) An abstract of the research project (< 300 words).

3) A complete manuscript, including the bibliography and illustrations (posters & PowerPoint presentations will not be accepted).

Award:

The recipient will receive complimentary registration for one day at the next live FMF. In addition, the Research Award for Family Medicine Residents may reimburse up to $1,500 to offset the costs of accommodation, meals, and travel to attend FMF.

Department of Family Medicine Resident Leadership Award

The Department of Family Medicine Resident Leadership Award recognizes a PGY2 family medicine resident who in the final year of residency training has shown:

• leadership skills
• mentorship ability
• dedication to family medicine; and
• active involvement and contribution to the evolution and improvement of the Family Medicine Residency Training Program at the University of Alberta.

Submission Requirements:

1) A completed nomination form.

2) Endorsement (to be completed by the nominator).

3) A summary or short-form curriculum vitae (max. 2 pages) that demonstrates the resident’s leadership and mentoring qualities, and his/her commitment to improving and achieving excellence in family medicine training.

Award:

The award amount is $500.

Application is by way of a nomination by a preceptor, fellow resident, faculty advisor, site administrator or program director.

Department of Family Medicine Research and Scholarship Award

The Department of Family Medicine Resident Research and Scholarship Award recognizes the best research and/or scholarly works of a second-year family resident in the Department of Family Medicine.

Residents may apply, or Department members may submit a nominee, by completing an application/nomination form. The applicant (or nominee) must be a current family medicine resident who has completed a research project or PQI during their residency. A project summary report should be included with the application. The Department Awards Committee will recommend the recipient for this award, with the recommendation based on a review process.

Eligibility:

Family medicine residents (PGY2)

Submission Requirements:

1) A completed application/nomination form.

2) A project summary or report on the resident’s research project or PQI project.

Award:

The award amount is $500 total.

Westview Family Medicine Resident Leadership Award

The WPC Family Medicine (FM) Resident Leadership Award recognizes a resident who has played a significant leadership role in both clinical and extracurricular activities and, in so doing, has had a demonstrable impact on improving the quality of resident experience within and beyond the residency program, furthering the Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) education mission, and advocating on behalf of the specialty of family medicine. Such work could include, but is not limited to, organizing social events, educational forums, workshops and lectures; and participation in leadership and mentoring programs led by the FMRP and/or the Family Medicine Residents’ Association (FMRA). The resident must be shown as a role model and contribute to the wellbeing of fellow residents.

Eligibility:

A Family Medicine (FM) resident in the Urban FM Residency Program in the Department of Family Medicine, University of Alberta.

Submission Requirements:

This endorsement form for the candidate must be submitted by the nominator, who can be a preceptor, resident, faculty advisor, site administrator or program director, among others.

Award:

Two awards at a value of $250 each – one for a FMR1; and one for a FMR2 resident.

Westview Family Medicine Resident Research Award

The WPC Family Medicine (FM) Resident Research Award recognizes a resident who embraces the principles of evidence-based practice, contributes to clinical knowledge base through research, and has developed a research proposal or has completed a research study that shows validity, innovation, and originality.

Eligibility:

Family Medicine (FM) resident in the PGY2 year of his/her Urban FM Residency Program in the Department of Family Medicine, University of Alberta

Submission Requirements:

1) Endorsement for the candidate must be submitted by the nominator, who can be a preceptor, resident, faculty advisor, site administrator or program director, among others.

2) A research project description, summary or report, will also be helpful.

Award:

• One award at a value of $250 – for a FMR2 resident.
• Submissions will be adjudicated through a review process administered by the Department of Family Medicine Awards Committee. The Awards Committee will make its final recommendation to the Westview Physician Collaborative.

Westview Resident Clinical Excellence Award

The WPC Family Medicine (FM) Resident Clinical Excellence Awards recognize residents who have demonstrated dedication to and excellence in the practice of family medicine, evidence-based clinical knowledge, excellence in teaching, professionalism and integrity.

Eligibility:

Family Medicine (FM) resident in the Urban FM Residency Program in the Department of Family Medicine (DoFM), University of Alberta.

Submission Requirements:

1) A completed nomination form.

2) Endorsement of the candidate must be submitted by the nominator, who could be a preceptor, resident, faculty advisor, site administrator or program director, among others.

Award:

• Two awards at a value of $250 each – one for a FMR1; and one for a FMR2 resident.
• Submissions will be adjudicated through a review process administered by the Awards Committee. The DoFM Awards Committee will make its final recommendation to the Westview Physician Collaborative.

The Bollozos Family Award in Medicine

The Bollozos Family Award in Medicine is awarded to a resident physician who is registered with the Alberta International Medical Graduate Program with satisfactory academic standing in the program of Public Health or Family Medicine. Selection is based on academic standing. Preference will be given to a resident physician with demonstrated volunteer experience in an underserved community.

Submission Requirement:

Completion of nomination form.

As adjudication of nominations will be based solely on the nominator endorsement, we encourage comments that are thoughtful, insightful, and also substantive in demonstrating the qualities sought for this award. Descriptions, listings or profiling of accomplishments and activities should be incorporated.

Award:

Two cash awards will be awarded.

Joe Tilley and The Allin Clinic Family Medicine Award

The Dr. Joe Tilley and The Allin Clinic Family Medicine Award is awarded to a resident in the second year of the Family Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education program. Selection is based on demonstrated scholarly excellence, mentorship abilities and passion for family medicine.

Submission Requirement:

Completion of the nomination form.

As adjudication of nominations will be based solely on the completion of this form, we encourage comments that are thoughtful, insightful, and also substantive in demonstrating the qualities sought for this award. Descriptions, listings or profiling of accomplishments and activities should be included. Please do not include a curriculum vitae.

Award:

This is a cash award. All nominations are unofficial and should remain confidential until the Department of Family Medicine has received written confirmation from the Student Awards Office.

Medical Student Awards

Patricia Ann Peat Residency & Student Family Medicine Enhancement Fund

Purpose:

The Patricia Ann Peat Residency & Student Family Medicine Enhancement Fund at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, was established to assist the Department of Family Medicine in providing exciting and personally enriching experiences in the discipline of family medicine and primary care family medicine research.

Eligibility:

• All medical students registered in the MD Program of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta.
• All residents registered in the first two years of the Family Medicine Residency Program in the Department of Family Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta.

Criteria:

Criteria used by the Department of Family Medicine to select medical students and family medicine residents to receive the funding include:

• Demonstration of sincere interest in the discipline of family medicine and wishing an opportunity to further that interest by participation in provincial, national or international Family Medicine/Primary Care meetings.
• Assisting medical students and residents in Family Medicine to present research findings from family medicine/primary care research generated within the Department of Family Medicine, at provincial or national conferences.
• To assist interested medical students and family residents with significant leadership roles in the medical student's Family Medicine Interest Group or Family Medicine Residents Association in attending provincial and national meetings and conferences that further their leadership skills.

These are to be allocated at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and the Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.

Submission Requirements:

1) A brief curriculum vitae (maximum 4 pages)

2) Two nominator endorsements (separate form)

Funding will be considered, but not limited to, the following costs:

• Transportation
• Accommodation
• Conference registration fees

The Endowment Fund will be administered by the university in accordance with the Post-Secondary Learning Act, the Endowment Management Policy, the Statement of Operating Principles and Spending Policy and the Endowment Investment Policy.

NAPCRG Student Family Medicine/ Primary Care Research Award

The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) Student Family Medicine/ Primary Care Research Award recognizes outstanding family medicine/primary care research performed by a medical student.

Eligibility:

• The research for consideration must have been completed during medical school.
• The nature of the research must be "family medicine/primary care" research.
• Jointly done research between two medical students may be eligible for a joint award.
• Research must be in large measure performed by the medical student. This includes most, but not necessarily all, of the following: inception of the idea; development of the project; gathering of data; presenting of results; or writing the report/publication.
