Welcome to Family Medicine Research at the University of Alberta. Our comprehensive Primary Care Research Program includes the Theme Areas of Health Services, Medical Education, Care of the Elderly, Distinct Populations and research related to the discipline of family medicine.

Family medicine residents have many opportunities to develop research and scholarly skills through a variety of academic activities. Our integrated Family Medicine Residency Research Curriculum ensures that residents acquire the skills to become lifelong learners and to keep up-to-date. The curriculum is comprised of evidence-based workshops; journal club; finding answers to clinical questions (BEARs project); practice quality improvement projects (PQI); Research Day; research project (optional); and research electives (optional).

Research Mission & Values

Our mission is to:

  • promote, support, create, and disseminate research knowledge and scholarly activity in the discipline of family medicine,
  • increase research capacity in the Department of Family Medicine, and
  • enhance the research skills of faculty members, residents, and students.

The research program values:

  • excellence and quality in research and scholarly activity,
  • interdisciplinary collaboration on research projects,
  • highest ethical standards in the conduct of research projects, and
  • the diversity of general family practice and the research questions that arise.
