Wahkohtowin Lodge

The Wahkohtowin Lodge is a gathering place for everyone on campus. All students are welcome to use the space to meet, work, relax, and play. Follow the paths traced on the ground, which converge at the site of the Elders' room. Gaze up at a ceiling feature that evokes the nehiyaw mîkiwahp (tipi) outside the Faith and Life Centre. Take a seat against the trees lining the south wall, reminiscent of a forest.

The Lodge was created in the spirit of wahkohtowin, a nehiyaw (Plains Cree) concept related to "kinship." wahkohtowin refers to the ties of mutuality and reciprocity that create responsibilities to other human beings and to animals, to the land, the water, and the sky, that offer the bases of our lives and relationships.

The Wahkohtowin Lodge is a meeting and gathering space for our Augustana community. In this space you will find a central gathering space with comfy chairs and tables under the mîkiwahp, a flexible classroom space for meetings and seminars, and a community space for our Indigenous students. Within the community space, our Indigenous students can access a range of services, as well as connect with other members of our Indigenous community on campus.

The Wakhohtowin Lodge opened in November 2015, with a grand opening celebration in March 2016.
