Overview
Shandong University is one of China's original institutions of higher learning. Established in 1864, Tengchow College of Liberal Arts (Dengzhou Wenhuiguan), where its medical program originated, was the predecessor of Cheeloo University and signified the beginning of modern Chinese higher education.
After the merger in 2000, Shandong University has made significant progress in scientific research, as demonstrated by its rapid progress in various scientific research indexes. In 2012, the amount of Shandong University's articles indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) ranked 8th among domestic universities, the fourth consecutive year for the university to rank within the top 10.
Covering an area of over 533 hectares (including 200 hectares of the Qingdao Campus), Shandong University is large in scale, comprising 8 campuses (Jinan Central Campus, Hongjialou Campus, Baotuquan Campus, Qianfoshan Campus, Campus of Qilu Software College, Xinglongshan Campus, Qingdao Campus, and Weihai Campus) in three different cities (Jinan, Qingdao, and Weihai). It also enjoys a teaching and administrative staff of 10,200 (including those from the Weihai Campus and the 3 affiliated hospitals). Its full-time student population totals up to 60,000, of which 41,000 are undergraduates, 16,000 are postgraduates, and more than 1,700 are international students.
