Overview

Founded in 1919, Nankai University is one of China's oldest and most prestigious public universities and is the alma mater of China's first Prime Minister, Zhou Enlai. Located in the bustling port city of Tianjin, Nankai is a hub of economic activities and international trade. As of 2014, Nankai had developed cooperative relationships with more than 300 overseas universities and research institutes from about 40 countries.

Tianjin is the third largest city in China and one of the four cities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government of the People's Republic of China. Located only 30 minutes from Beijing by bullet train, Tianjin is the economic center of northern China, an international trading port, and a leading city in ecological development.

Students who are Canadian citizens applying for this program are encouraged to apply for funding through the Canada Learning Initiative in China (CLIC) program.

Language of Instruction: English, Chinese

The 2019 Summer School Program offered a variety of courses taught in English covering interdisciplinary topics like Chinese Economics, Business, History, Law and Society, Public Policy, and Chinese Language and culture (including fun electives like Tai Chi, Chinese Paper cutting, and Folk music). In addition, field trips will be arranged for participants to experience traditional Chinese culture and explore unique perspectives on China.

  • Weeks 1 & 2 = Doing Business in China, Chinese Language Training, Chinese Cultural Class, Field Trips (on weekends)
  • Weeks 3 & 4 = Belt & Road Initiative and Chinese Economic Development, Chinese Language Training, Chinese Cultural Class, Field Trips (weekends)

The field trips include a variety of company visits and tours around Tianjin and Beijing.

Housing

Accommodation: Students will live in Nankai's overseas student dormitory in double occupancy rooms with bathroom facilities and broadband internet.

Students are responsible for their travel arrangements and any additional costs, including visa fees, vaccinations, medical coverage, books and supplies, extra food costs, entertainment, and incidental expenses.
