Overview
What the Program has to offer:
- This is a three-week, six-credit course, in which students will participate in an
archaeological field school in Jordan. - During the first week, we will be based at the American Center of Research, in
Amman, where students will gain first-hand experience handling and
documenting ancient artifacts. - For the next two weeks we carry out an archaeological survey of Humayma,
which was founded by the Nabataeans and flourished throughout the Roman
period into the early Islamic period. - Students will learn traditional and digital techniques for mapping, surveying, and
documenting architectural remains and surface finds. - Participants will also experience the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of
Jordan through site visits to:
o the ancient city of Jerash, known as the Pompeii of the East,
o the stunning landscape of Wadi Rum, featured in many Hollywood movies,
o and the rock-carved city of Petra, which was named one of the New 7
Wonders of the World.

Field of Study: This six-credit course is open to students with a background in Classics, Classical Archaeology, Anthropology, Art History and Ancient History. Students from other disciplines may apply too but are encouraged to contact the project director prior to sending in their application. Undergraduate students will be registered in CLASS 475 - FIELD TECHNIQUES IN CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY and CLASS 476 ADVANCED FIELD - TECHNIQUES IN CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY (*6). Graduate students will be registered in CLASS 601 & CLASS 602 - STUDIES IN CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY I AND II (*6). Important: These courses will partially fulfill the requirements for the BA with a major in Classics, BA with minor in Classics and the Faculty of Arts Certificates in Archaeology.
Fees and Costs
Anticipated Costs:- Tuition and non-instructional fees: $1,623.85 9 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. International students on the program-based tuition fee model are encouraged to contact the Student Service Centre to confirm tuition fees.
- Program fee: $2,100 (includes shared accommodation and most food and ground transportation in country during program)
- Visa: $135
- Return airfare: ~$2,000
- Food on days off and transportation to/from airport: ~$130
