The Russia-Ukraine war: Roots and geopolitical context

The 2023 Annual Shevchenko Lecture took place on 7 March 2023 at the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) on the University of Alberta campus.

For the 2023 Annual Shevchenko Lecture, CIUS welcomed Alexander Vindman, retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and former White House National Security Council Director for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Russia.

In his presentation to a standing-room-only crowd of 500+, Vindman analyzed the roots of the current Russian war on Ukraine and offered clearly-mapped geopolitical and historical context. His talk encompassed the period from 1991 to 2023 and included a discussion on the implications of the war for the next decade.

Alexander Vindman is a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and former White House National Security Council Director for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Russia, Senior Fellow at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies' Foreign Policy Institute, Pritzker Military Fellow at the Lawfare Institute, executive board member of the Renew Democracy Initiative, and a senior advisor for VoteVets.

The Shevchenko Lecture has been a flagship event of CIUS since 1980.
The 2023 Shevchenko Lecture was organized by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta, and co-sponsored by the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association of Edmonton (UCPBAE) and the Alberta Foundation for Ukrainian Education Society.
