The Maidan was a turning point, consolidating the competitive nature of the Ukrainian political system and making Ukraine more Ukrainian in terms of nationality and identification with the state. This lecture took a critical look at how the violence on the Maidan, from state and non-state actors, impacted how the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been framed—in Ukraine, among international stakeholders, and in academia.

Dominique Arel is an associate professor of political science and the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Ottawa. His book on the war in the Donbas, co-authored with Jesse Driscoll (University of California at San Diego), is forthcoming at Cambridge University Press. He has published extensively on language, identity, and regional politics in Ukraine.
