Convocation ‘24: Owen Lamb, BMgt Business Economics

Embarking on his studies in business management, Owen is a determined team player whose enthusiasm for business propelled him to pursue his education at the University of Alberta Augustana Campus. 

Recognizing the widespread influence of business in our daily lives, he views his chosen field of study as a path to success in various pursuits. Additionally, Owen was drawn to Augustana's dedication to nurturing both academic and extracurricular passions, including his love for hockey. This alignment with his interests affirmed his choice and solidified his commitment to the Augustana community.

Through his journey, Owen’s leadership shone brightly, especially during his time on the Augustana Vikings men’s hockey team. His teammates trusted him as part of the leadership group four out of five of his seasons, and then as captain for the last two — a testament to his ability to inspire and lead. 

Over four seasons, Owen navigated the complexities of managing diverse personalities, sharpening his communication skills and understanding the importance of shared values in both individual and group contexts. His experience as a leader not only shaped his personal growth but also contributed to the cohesion and success of the team.

He looks forward to celebrating his convocation surrounded by loved ones. With eager anticipation for the next chapter of his life, Owen is returning home to Saskatchewan, excited for what lies ahead.

What led you to choose your current area of study, and why the U of A Augustana for your studies?

Business plays an integral part in our everyday lives. I believe that by choosing this area of study that it will set me up for success in any field I choose. I decided to attend the U of A Augustana because, upon completion, I would walk away with a highly regarded degree. Augustana also allowed me the opportunity to continue my passion for hockey, which was very important to me.

What is one of your favourite memories from your time at Augustana?

My favourite memory from Augustana would be going to support the court sport teams during [our weekends without hockey games]. Augustana's gym always has a great atmosphere making it a lot of fun to watch and cheer on your friends from other teams.

Tell us about your favourite professor/lecturer and/or class.

In my opinion the best business lecturer I had was Joseph Owusu, [who now teaches at MacEwan University]. He was very knowledgeable and was great at explaining course material. His ability to take the subject matter and teach us the real life implications of it set him apart from the other professors. I took my capstone class (Business Policy & Strategy) with Joseph. As part of this course we ran our own business simulation, competing against the other students in the class. This part of the class required us to lean into all the knowledge we accumulated over our degree, while competing against our classmates made it a fun/memorable experience. 

Did you take on any leadership roles while you were a student, either on campus or in the Camrose community? 

My biggest leadership accomplishment was being voted by my peers to lead the men's hockey team. I was a part of the leadership group for four of my five seasons with the team, and the captain for the last two. This taught me a lot about managing different personalities, communicating effectively and the importance values play both individually as well as in group settings.

How did you get where you are today?

I believe I got to where I am today through the support of my family and friends. They played a large role in shaping the person I am. I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish up until this point of my life, and I believe the decisions I have made will set me up for success moving forward.

What advice do you have for current and future students?

Treat university like a Monday-Friday job so you can enjoy your weekends. I would also recommend chipping away at your homework everyday so that you don't have to cram before deadlines to reduce stress.

How do you plan on celebrating convocation?

Enjoying the day with my family and friends by sharing this experience together.

What's next after graduation?

Move back home to Saskatchewan, where I look forward to moving onto the next chapter in my life.
