Congratulations to the recipients of the 2024 Mark Chytracek Leadership Award

The Mark Chytracek Leadership Award was created in 2016 in honour of Mark Chytracek (1958-2015), former director of student and resident services and dear friend of Augustana. This award pays homage to Mark's long service to Augustana and his unwavering support for students and student leadership development. Selection is based on demonstrated leadership, service, academic standing and overall investment in the life of Augustana Campus and/or the broader civic community.

Recipients

Jessica Andreas, BA in Law, Crime and Justice Studies

Jessica Andreas epitomizes empowerment and service at Augustana. As president of the Augustana Students' Association (ASA), she fostered leadership culture and enhanced student experience. Notably, Jessica introduced councilor projects where she provided guidance and mentorship to ASA councilors who supported projects like the Augustana Round Dance and Culture Clash, thereby addressing community issues and fostering leadership in her fellow students. Her resilience and empathy earned her the award, recognizing her ability to effect change. Jessica is looking forward to her next steps as she pursues a joint Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degree. She aims to extend leadership and advocacy to law school, envisioning a nonprofit clinic for marginalized individuals in the legal system.

Adrian Lam, BSc in Integrative Biology

Adrian Lam embodies active engagement and impactful service at Augustana. As the Augustana's representative on the Students' Council of the University of Alberta Students’ Union, he led advocacy efforts and fostered unity among students, amplifying their voices campus-wide. Motivated by the pandemic's challenges, Adrian entered student leadership, experiencing first-hand its transformative power and desiring to contribute meaningfully. He advises students to explore diverse opportunities for involvement, recognizing the enrichment it brings. The award symbolizes recognition for his contributions, affirming the value of each individual's impact on campus. Grateful for the connections and experiences at Augustana, he leaves with cherished memories and lessons, forever influenced by his time as a student.

Honourable Mentions

Adachukwu Chimaobi, BSc in Psychology

Adachukwu Chimaobi’s university journey was characteristic of her  commitment to community building and personal growth. Notable for her involvement in the Chaplaincy program, she cultivated valuable connections and grew her interpersonal skills. Motivated by a desire to make the most of her university experience, she found a distinct passion for community building and leadership. She aims to extend her leadership beyond university, aspiring to impact her local community and pursue a medical career. She emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities today, as tomorrow is uncertain.

Arsenii Litus, BMgt in Business Management

Arsenii Litus exemplifies leadership and service within the business program at Augustana. As president of the Business Undergraduate Learning and Leadership Society (BULLS) club, he empowered students through workshops and networking. His precision in assembling a team, and organizing workshops for 25+ students weekly, showcased strong leadership. Arsenii advocates for active participation on campus, urging students to immerse themselves in diverse opportunities to uncover their passions and talents. He emphasizes the value of exploration, noting that engagement fosters self-discovery and personal development. 

“I believe that everyone has the ability to change something. Of course, it might not seem significant at first sight, but imagine if all of us do this. How big would our overall contribution be?”

Sarah Nagel, BSc in Psychology

Sarah Nagel has demonstrated unwavering commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization (EDID) efforts at Augustana. Throughout their four years, they played a pivotal role in the Augustana Students' Association (ASA), notably as vice-president of student life. Sarah's advocacy for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community led to the organization of Drag Bingo events and Pride Week 2024, emphasizing inclusive participation. The honourable mention Sarah received symbolizes their dedication to student governance and represents a responsibility to the campus community. Sarah plans to pursue a master's degree specializing in Sport Psychology at the University of Alberta.
