    Beth Frey, Visiting Artist: FAB Gallery / Sculpture & Expanded Media – Artist Talk | Beth Frey works with a variety of media, including drawing, painting, video, sculpture and installation. Through her wry, absurdist sense of humour, Frey playfully draws out contradictions in her subject matter, blurring the beautiful and the grotesque, the innocent and the perverse, often integrating representations of herself into her chromatic cartoon-like world.     Zoë Heyn-Jones, Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Postdoctoral Fellow (2023-25), University of Alberta, Department of Art & Design and Drama – Decomposition + Regeneration: Composting Art, Design & Performance in the Americas | This talk explores a multitude of creative composting practices at the nexus of art, design and performance, with a focus on encounters across the Americas. We will examine the composting of food waste through the lens of discard studies, consider compost toilets in contexts of water scarcity and soil depletion, and recognize earthworms as beings within the logics of queer ecology.  (view poster)

About our Speaker Series

The Department of Art & Design hosts several visiting and local speakers annually. The Visual Art & Design Forum (VADF) is a speaker series for scholars, creative researchers, artists, and designers to discuss their projects with the University of Alberta community. Presentation formats vary widely, from the traditional lecture to dynamic panel discussions.
