SSHRC Research Groups

SSHRC grant proposal application forms ask you to select a primary discipline and area of research, and to identify which "Research Group" you consider most appropriate for your proposal. SSHRC creates adjudication committees based on these groups, and according to the number and nature of applications received. Insofar as a good research proposal takes it's audience into account, it is essential to identify the correct Research Group for your research adjudication. But the research group information is rather buried in SSHRC's website. You may find it easier to bookmark this page:
Research Groups

Group 1: History; mediaeval studies; classics; literature; fine arts; philosophy; religious studies; and related fields.

Group 2: Anthropology; archaeology; linguistics; translation; political science; public administration; law; criminology; geography; urban planning and environmental studies; and related fields.

Group 3: Business and management; economics; and related fields.

Group 4: Sociology; demography; communication studies; journalism; media studies; gender studies; cultural studies; library and information science; and related fields.

Group 5: Education, psychology; social work; and related fields.

Applicants submitting proposals that are multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary in nature, and who wish to have their proposal considered by committee reviewers from more than one discipline and/or area of research, must indicate secondary and tertiary disciplines and areas of research, and include a rationale for the request. SSHRC will use this rationale to determine the most appropriate review for the application. Applicants may contact SSHRC to discuss group selection:
