Budget Planning and Development

The SSHRC Insight Development Grant, Insight Grant, Partnership Development Grant and Partnership Grant considers budget and budget justification under its Feasibility criterion.
The following resources may assist you with budget preparation:

Salaries for Academic and Support Staff employees (University of Alberta Human Resources)*

Graduate Teaching or Research Assistantships (Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research)

Please note: Article 9 of the Collective Agreement states:

"The duties of a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) are primarily in support of a faculty member's academic research. Such duties may include, but are not limited to: collecting/coding/analyzing data, literature reviews, library research, writing reports, designing conference presentations,and preparing materials for submission to funding agencies. The duties of a GRA are to help prepare the Graduate Assistant for further academic and professional opportunities. In view of this, GRA functions shall not include: personal services for the Assistantship Supervisor, administrative work(e.g. clerical or technical), cleaning up after a department function or research symposium, or maintaining the personal equipment (e.g. computer) of the Graduate Assistantship Supervisor."

Travel Expense Procedure

Government of Canada lists Travel directives, which include meal and incidental allowances, kilometric rates, currency exchange and more (See Appendices C, B, and D, respectively). These are updated bi-monthly, and may be more accurate than UAlberta estimates.

Various Consultation and Special Services Costs:

Need to support accessibility in project communications (eg: Sign Language interpretation, Braile transcription, accessible formatting)? The people in the Accessibility Resources might be able to help you find the right consultant. The Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Alberta also lists interpreters available for contracted work.

Transcription services vary in costs depending on the quality of the recording and the language: The Translation Agency of Alberta lists transcription costs at $3/minute for non-English languages.
