Abstract:

This presentation will share how school-based mental health literacy and early identification approaches embedded in the school-based pathway to care model have made substantial improvements on the understanding of mental health and mental disorders, decreased stigma and enhanced help-seeking efficacy among students and educators alike in Canadian secondary schools.

The mental health literacy approach will be discussed from the perspective of the Canada’s integrated population health model. The presentation will further discuss a number of community-based research studies to address child and youth mental health applying mental health literacy interventions. Finally, implementation science strategies will be discussed to explore the acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and scalability of mental health literacy interventions into routine professional practice.

Bio:

Dr. Yifeng Wei is a distinguished researcher with a PhD from Dalhousie University. Her scholarly pursuits are deeply rooted in the field of school mental health, where she specializes in knowledge translation. Dr. Wei's research focuses on enhancing mental health literacy, combating the stigma associated with mental illness, and fostering improved help-seeking behaviors among secondary school students. Her interdisciplinary approach not only addresses mental health issues at the local and national levels but also aims to make significant contributions internationally. Through her work, Dr. Wei is committed to promoting mental health awareness and early intervention in educational settings, making her a pivotal figure in the realm of school mental health research.
