Anti-Racism: Management and Remediation
Those who are responsible for dealing with racism complaints need to be well trained and familiar with the context of racism.
We are working on the creation of a separate guide for chairs, assistant/associate deans, supervisors, program directors and mentors on the approach to dealing with racism.
Faculty members who are reported with racism as a concern will have a coach to help them with self-reflection for change in behaviour.
FoMD members who have been identified as having contributed to experiences of racism of others are required to engage in coaching and education plans that require self-reflection around personal and professional views, privilege, racism, anti-racism, allyship and different forms of racism (internalized racism, interpersonal racism, structural racism). These coaching and education plans are designed to ensure that the behaviors, structures and processes that have caused harm and concern are addressed in a prompt and psychologically safe manner.
We commit to provide appropriate support and care for Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) members of our faculty, including a psychologist with expertise in the context of racism and trauma-informed care.
Our future
We are considering the expansion of services and resources already offered by our Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing (OAW). In addition, we are taking initiative in partnership with Alberta Health Services, University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine, Alberta Medical Association, Canadian Medical Association, the EDI Alberta Collaborative and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA), to co-develop mechanisms to deal with racism in clinical environments. We are working to address the identified challenges in capacity and resources.
